Need a Hug
Do you need a hug? You do?

You’ve picked the perfect day.

It’s National Hug Day.

Hugging Day was founded by Rev. Kevin Zaborney on January 21, 1986 in Caro, Michigan, and has since spread to Canada, England, Australia, Germany and Poland.

I grew up in Michigan. January is a cold month. Hugging is a great idea.

Two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? Ecclesiastes 4:11

Definitions for the word – hug:

  • to clasp tightly in the arms, especially with affection; embrace.
  • a non-sexual touch, like a handshake or a high-five.

10 Reason Why You Need a Hug

1. Hugging builds trust and a sense of safety.
2. Hugging causes the body to release oxytocin, the ‘feel-good’ hormone.
3. Hugging lowers stress and anxiety.
4. Hugging boosts memory.
5. Hugging lowers cortisol levels, benefitting moods, heart health, and weight.
6. Hugging reduces pain and increases pain tolerance because it helps relaxation.
8. Hugging improves self-esteem because it helps us feel valued and loved.
9. Hugging increases serotonin levels improving mood and feeling of happiness.
10. Hugging strengthens the immune system by stimulating the thymus gland that regulates the production of white blood cells.

Hugging is a powerful source of healing. In fact, research shows that hugging (like laughter) is effective at healing both physical and emotional issues. Simply put . . . hugging makes you feel good.

My Favorite Quotes about Hugging

“A hug is like a boomerang – you get it back right away.”  ~Bil Keane, “Family Circus”

“That’s what people do who love you. They put their arms around you and love you when you’re not so lovable.” ~ Deb Calleti

“We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth.” ~ Virginia Satir

Everyday should be hug day! So…

  • Hug your parents.
  • Hug your spouse.
  • Hug your kids.
  • Hug your friends.
  • Hug your pet.

But don’t hug a squirrel. It’s also Squirrel Appreciation Day. . . and I have nothing to say about it!

Let’s Talk: Are you a hugger? What do you think about Satir’s quote?

  1. Oooh! This is a great day! I so agree with all the benefits listed above and plan to share a bunch of hugs today!

    Blessings, Joan

P.S. Don’t worry, I’ll stay away from the squirrels!

    1. Oh good, hugging squirrels is much less satisfying. 🙂 Enjoy everyone of those hugs today!

  2. I knew hugging released oxytocin, but I didn’t know it lowered cortisol. That’s interesting. So after dieting and exercise and coffee, I can balance it all out with a lot of hugs.

    1. Isn’t it great! I bet you feel better already! 🙂
