We crave something to believe in. Promises we can count on. There is hope and truth for the cynical and searching.
It seems that promises and cynicism go together like PB and J. Try looking up quotes about promises and most talk about failure and disappointment.

Everyone knows the quote:

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

Yet unkept promises are things we’ve learned to accept as the norm.

If you’re tired of and discouraged by broken promises keep reading . . . there is truth and hope found in the One who always has and always will keep His promises.

Truth and Hope for the Promise Cynic

God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. Psalm 18:30

“A promise is only as good as the person who makes it. The character of the promiser is what gives the promise its value. His promises are meant to ignite faith and expectation and desire, and then to point us to Him. His promises act to bind our hearts to His. His promises turn our eyes toward Him. When our hearts are occupied with who He is, it will not be hard to believe what He promises to do. The revelation of His person is the secret to trusting His promises.” ~Jennifer K Dean

For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. You rule throughout all generations. The Lord always keeps His promises; He is gracious in all he does. Psalm 145:13

God is not a man, so He does not lie. He is not human, so He does not change His mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through? Numbers 23:19

But I [The Lord] will never stop loving Him nor fail to keep my promise to Him. No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said. Psalm 89:33–34

I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: “O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! You always fulfill Your covenant and keep Your promises of unfailing love to those who love You and obey Your commands. Daniel 9:4

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for His glory. 2 Corinthians 1:20

  1. I liked them all, but especially the ones by Jennifer Dean and Francis Chan.
    Leaning on His promises today!
    Blessings, Deb!

  2. I was ready to play the trumpet for Pink quote. Then I read Joni’s. WOW! The others were good also but that one just stuck with me. I’m glad I know what I can know because He is faithful.

  3. Well, I’ve always been partial to Arthur Pink 😉 .
I tend to be let down with broken promises way more often then I should–even though I know God is the only One who can keep all His promises, and even though I know that I, in turn, let others down at times inevitably. So many things I can let go of easily. But this one–I struggle with.
I definitely need to focus more on accepting that He will always keep His promises and that should be all I need.
Thank you for this collection of reminders.
    Blessings,

  4. Thanks to each of you. I so appreciate your comments. I think my favorite is Joni Eareckson Tada’s quote. How I need to lean into His promises when life is hard.
