12 Things to Pray for Your Children and Grandchildren

Our kiddos are grown and we’re now enjoying the grandparenting stage. Wow! It’s fun!

As I look back on our years of parenting there is really only one thing I would change.

I would pray more! Lots more!

I prayed for my children regularly, but oh, I would pray more specifically and intentionally.

You may have heard this story before, but I can’t resist sharing it again:

A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they drew. She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s artwork. As she  got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing  was.  The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.”

The teacher paused and said, “but no one knows what God looks like.”
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”

Every generation believes there are presently more challenges standing in opposition to raising godly children than there were in previous generations. It is possible that it is a truth for 21st Century parents.

• Fewer families have the influence of close relatives living nearby to reinforce their beliefs.
• The internet and television while offering many good things; they offer plenty of negative influence as well.
• Peer pressure and bullying aren’t new, but the internet has taken them to a new level.

And those just touch the surface, I’m sure those of you whose children are still living at home could add several more things to the list.

A Dozen Things to Pray for Your Children

 1. To know love and trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
2. To know how much God loves them.
3. To love God with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength.
4. To love others as they love themselves.
5. To know how much we love them.
6. To have healthy friendships.
7. To be humble and kind.
8. To have the courage and strength to resist temptation.
9. To know and use their gifts and abilities to God’s glory.
10. To know and express gratitude openly.
11. To live under God’s protection.
12. To be blessed with a spouse who knows and loves Jesus.

Father, Please help us to love and guide our children according to Your will. Bless them and grow them toward the futures you have prepared for them. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Scripture to Pray for Your Children

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6

 Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. Ephesians 3:17–18

So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deuteronomy 31:6

Keep growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Yeshua the Messiah. 2 Peter 3:18

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations. Ezekiel 36:26–27

And because we are His children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6
