A Prayer for When You Don’t Want to Surrender

If you're like me . . . you want your own way and you want it now. Here is my prayer to surrender control.
A Prayer to Surrender Control

For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for well-being and not for trouble, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Father, It’s hard to give in and give up control, to surrender my wants and wishes, my hopes and dreams to You.

[Tweet “It’s hard to trust when inside I’m screaming, “Me! Me! Me!””]

Please help me, Lord. I know Your ways are best, but my inner two-year-old whines to get what I have set my heart on.

If you're like me . . . you want your own way and you want it now. Here is my prayer to surrender control...

So, I foolishly do things by myself and end up in a mess. You’ll rescue me, won’t You?

I pray, “Your will be done and in Jesus name,” to get Your stamp of approval. You want what I want. You want my happiness . . . don’t You?

I listen to people who tell me what I want to hear, even when I know it’s wrong. You understand, don’t You?

Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

Father, Help me trust You completely. Help me focus on Your promises. Help me remember the ways You’ve proven Yourself true and faithful.

Lord, forgive me. I’m ashamed of myself.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not trust in your own understanding. Agree with Him in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Father, by Your grace and with Your help, I will surrender my all to You.

I am only the manager of blessings You’ve given. Believing anything else is selfish, stubborn, foolish, and idolatry.

There is freedom, comfort, contentment, joy, peace, and understanding in trusting You completely.

In You, there is no need to manipulate people, things, circumstances, or truth. In You I have all I need, and by the power of Your Spirit . . . I have all I want.

Father, by Your grace, help me to begin each day surrendered completely to You with this prayer:

I have surrendered this day to You, Lord. I will follow where You guide and I will do Your will as You show it to me. Father, help me this day to fulfill this vow – that my life might glorify You alone . . . in the name of Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thank you Father for Your grace and mercy. Thank you for Your forgiveness and love.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. Deb, you have hit on a topic that I seem to “loop” on regarding the sovereignty of God. When I pray, I have a tendency to “prescribe,” as if I know the right outcome, and just need to fill God in on how to go about things. So thankful that He is gracious, and He is working on me! Thanks for hosting this friendly place.

  2. There is such a blessing in this…”Trusting God allows us to have peace, contentment, and joy.” ( my paraphrase of your words above.) 😉

This simple act of trust, it is a giving back to God…a tithe of our hearts, to believe He is exactly WHO He says He is, ( Heb 11:6) and will be faithful ( 1 Thes 5:23-24).

Deb, thank you for being faithful to remind us of His grace and faithfulness so often, and for allowing community here.
    Blessings,
    Dawn

So many good nuggets, Deb! I was just thinking yesterday, “It’s not God’s job to make me happy. That’s completely up to me!” oh, to trust in Him completely and to let go of me, me, me!

  4. “There is freedom, comfort, contentment, joy, peace, and understanding in trusting You completely.” Oh how true that is! Thank you for your lovely post reminding us that God wants us to yield ourselves to Him. He is so faithful and knows our needs and weaknesses. It seems like we need to be reminded over and over again that we need to stop trying on our own and remember that He walks right along with us. His wisdom will guide. 5. I love, love, love your prayer of surrender at the end of this post, Deb! I’ve copied it and will make it a part of my morning devotion.
Have a blessed weekend and Happy Mothers’ Day!

This post was just what I needed to see. I am struggling in a few areas today, and this is one of them. I liked how you added the scripture promise to back up your prayer.

    Very edifying post!

    Thanks for sharing!

  7. I have never really formed this thought before “I listen to people who tell me what I want to hear, even when I know it’s wrong,” but it is soooo true. i am even guilty of going to the person I know will give me the answer I want just so I have someone in agreement with me, which makes it easier to follow through with something I know is wrong.

Thank you for shedding this light on this topic for me today. It is something I need to work on, and it is something I will feel convicted on now, too.

Thank you for making me accountable to this.

  8. This post was right on time for me. I have been saying me,me,me and God always reminds me that I must display his character. You are truly anointed, I always enjoy reading your post. Have a great Mother’s Day.

  9. Yes; all about trust and faith!! Our future is as bright as our faith, it’s not knowing what the future holds, but knowing Who holds the future.

Have a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend dear friend!!

Deb, I opened this post yesterday and I didn’t get a chance to read it. It’s funny. I got some news that was troubling today and I’ve been desperately trying over these days to surrender my emotions to Him. Then I come back and finally get to read your words, and they are absolutely necessary for me. Thank you! Praying through these things now. 🙂
