Be Kind to Yourself and Improve Your Attitude

How you talk to yourself matters. Seriously would you let someone else talk to you that way. It's time to be kind to the person in the mirror.
When is the last time you smiled when you looked in the mirror?

What messages play in your head when you brush your teeth and comb your hair?

How long do you beat yourself up when you make a mistake?

What do you say to yourself while you’re doing some job you dislike?

I would never let anyone else talk to me the way I talk to myself. Can you relate?

The Mayo Clinic website lists the following as potential health benefits derived from positive thinking:

  • Increased life span
  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress
  • Greater resistance to the common cold
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

You get to decide whether your self-talk will be positive and constructive or negative and self-defeating.

You can change your self-talk. Seriously, isn’t it time you break the habit of self-bashing?

God made you exactly the way He wanted to accomplish His plans and purposes. What if all of your self-defeating talk is keeping you from doing what He wants.

Let’s make a commitment to change.

Starting today:

1. When you look in the mirror – find at least one thing you like and compliment yourself.

2. When you make a mistake – thank God for His forgiveness and forgive yourself.

3. When you’re doing a job you dislike – think of one small reward you’ll give yourself when you’re finished.

4. Repeat 1-3 as often as necessary.

Bible verses to remember:

 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. Psalm 139:13–14

Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are His. We are his people, the sheep of His pasture. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation. Psalm 100:3&5

God has given each of you a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 1 Peter 2:10

How can you say:

You can’t . . . when  the Bible says: You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. Philippians 4:13

You’re unlovable . . . when God said: I have loved you with an everlasting love. Jeremiah 31:3

You’re unwanted . . . when the Bible says: You are adopted and a child of God. 1 John 3:1

You’re unworthy . . . when the Bible says: You were purchased with the blood of Christ. Ephesians 1:7

You’re friendless . . . when the Bible says: Jesus calls you friend. John 15:15

You’re alone . . . when Jesus said: I am with you always. Matthew 28:20

No excuses.

It’s time for you (and me) to start being kinder to ourselves. No more comparing ourselves with airbrushed photos in magazines, the neighbors, or the seemingly perfect family in the pew in front of us on Sunday mornings.

It’s time for us to listen the truth of who God says we are, and change our attitude by repeating His message to ourselves as often as necessary.
