The Confession that Rescued My Hopes and Dreams

Once you've made a mess of things, I've learned that confession is the best thing to do. Air your dirt and hope for the grace of another chance...

It’s common for Sanguines to stick their feet in their mouth. Yes, I said feet. If we’re going to verbally stumble we’re going to do it big.

If you missed my “big mouth” lead-in to the story, you may want to head over and read it here.

The Confession that Rescued My Hopes and Dreams

I have to admit, I don’t remember much about our time with Brian and Kathy after my big blunder. I remember laughing a lot. Blake and Brian both are great at finding the humor in things and inspiring the people around them to join in the laughter.

But while I was laughing on the outside, inside my mind was racing.

What should I do? Was it even possible to fix this..?

I could visualize Kathy “throwing me under the bus” as soon as we left. I mean really, she didn’t even know me. As far as she was concerned I was “that girl.” The one who was going to break her brother-in-love’s heart.  I could totally imagine her recounting the story to Brian and encouraging him to tell Blake to RUN and run fast!

So, there really was only one option. Tell the truth. Spill my guts. Fess up. Come clean . . . or whatever you call embarrassed ugly confession.

So later, as just Blake and I pulled up in front of my dorm I sheepishly said, “I need to tell you something.”

Better coming from me than from his brother . . . right?

I told him every detail right down to the, “I’ve got him right where I want him” comment.

And he laughed! He laughed!

He thought it was hysterical! I guess it kind of was.

Talk about grace. I was so relieved. It was definitely not the reaction I expected, but it was the one I’d hoped for. I knew before then that he made my heart skip a beat and my palms sweat, but I think I started to fall in love with him just a bit that night.

I saw past the cute guy with dimples to the great big heart.

Oh yeah . . . here’s one more amazing part to the story.

Kathy never told Brian.

A few years later I brought it up when we were all together and Brian didn’t know a thing.

Kathy said she’d sat in the bathroom without making a sound. She didn’t want to embarrass me in front of my friend; so, she just sat there until after we left. And then pretended like it never happened.

Isn’t she awesome?!

That’s my story. It’s one of Brian’s favorites. He says it’s “family legend.”

The funny part about the whole thing is I’m not “that girl.” Never have been. The one time I decided to get a little sure of myself, God chose to reign me in real fast.

I’m glad He did.

I’m especially glad He allowed grace and laughter to accompany the lesson.

What’s the lesson? The moral of this part of the story:

A man who refuses to admit his mistakes can never be successful. But if he confesses and forsakes them, he gets another chance. Proverbs 28:13

I’m thankful Rev gave me another chance that January evening years ago and for every additional “chance” he’s given me since.

  1. Such a great story, Deb. I’m not surprised to learn that you are a sanguine — some of my favorite people are that temperament type, and I love the energy and POSITIVE outlook that you sanguines bring into a room! And into a blog!
    Blessings!

  3. Deb, I was laughing right along with Blake. I’m so glad it turned out the way it did, and I’m convinced it did only because you humbled yourself and came clean. What a great lesson for the rest of us as well. And Kathy’s example wasn’t lost on me either. Thank you for sharing your ‘family legend’ story. Love it!
