50 Simple Things to Do that will Make Every Day Better - Counting My Blessings

I was young, lonely, bored, and yes, feeling sorry for myself.

Rev and I moved to St. Louis just a few months after we were married so he could work at the Seminary where he would take classes in the fall.

My teaching job didn’t start for 10 weeks. In retrospect, I should have looked for a part-time job because sitting alone in our little apartment all day was not good for my mental health or my waistline.

I gained 35 lbs. that summer.

Oh, the things I wish my 21-year-old self had known back then. Things I could have done to embrace those days with few responsibilities in a community waiting for exploration.

If you’ve lost your sparkle and need a change, here’s a list of 50+ things I’ve learned about embracing life and making every day better. You can love your life even when things don’t look the way you’d like them to look.

50 Simple Things to Do that will Make Every Day Better

If you've lost your sparkle and need a change, here is a list of 50+ things I've learned about embracing life and making every day better.
1. Live in the present – don’t relive the past or worry about the future.

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Take time for prayer and Bible reading.

“We can be tired, weary and emotionally distraught, but after spending time alone with God, we find that He injects into our bodies energy, power and strength.” ~Charles Stanley

3. Ask, seek, and knock for truth and wisdom.

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7

4. Admit your mistakes and ask for forgiveness.

“Never ruin an apology with an excuse.” ~ Author Unknown

5. Refuse to participate in gossip.

A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends. Proverbs 16:28

6. Let go of your need for control.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” ~ Steve Maraboli

7. Watch a sunrise or sunset.

“If created things are seen and handled as gifts of God and as mirrors of His glory, they need not be occasions of idolatry – if our delight in them is always also a delight in their Maker.” ~John Piper

8. Use the good dishes and celebrate.

“There is no such thing in anyone’s life as an unimportant day.” – Alexander Woollcott

9. Spend time with a friend, do life together.

The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. Proverbs 27:9

10. Be your own best cheerleader – God loves unique and beautiful you.

Nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:39 (NLT)

11. Live with abundant gratitude.

“Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals. If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more.” ~ Roy T. Bennett

12. Tell the truth.

If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” ~ Mark Twain

13. Look for something good in everyone.

“When you choose to see the good in others, you end up finding the good in yourself.” ~ Anonymous

14. Drink more water.

“It frankly does not make sense to occasionally ‘fill up’ with water, with long periods of dehydration in between. The same thing is true spiritually. Spiritual thirst is a need for living water. A constant flow of living water is far superior to sporadic sipping.” ~David A. Bednar

15. Start each day with a clean slate.

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” ~ L. M. Montgomery

16. Don’t make comparisons.

“Comparison is the death of joy.” ~ Mark Twain

17. Keep your promises.

Keep every promise you make and only make promises you can keep.

18. Know your purpose and set reasonable goals.

You Need to Know and Live Your Plan with Purpose

19. Eat that Frog – do hard things first.

“The most valuable tasks you can do each day are often the hardest and most complex. But the payoff and rewards for completing these tasks efficiently can be tremendous.” ~Brian Tracy, author of Eat That Frog!

20. Stop trying to impress everyone.

“Christ continually shouts through the universe, “You have a love that is already yours. You have nothing to prove to anyone. You have nothing to prove to Me. You are significant and preapproved and utterly cherished. Not because you are ‘good,’ but because you are Mine.” ~Jennifer Dukes Lee

21. Make your bed.

You can celebrate an accomplishment before you leave your bedroom!

22. Don’t settle for just okay.

In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you were doing it for the Lord, not for people. Colossians 3:23

23. Do something for someone who can’t repay you.

“Unless we think of others and do something for them, we miss one of the greatest sources of happiness.” ~ Ray Lyman Wilbur

24. Be strong and courageous.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 3:16

25. Be someone’s smile.

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” ~Mother Teresa

26. Notice and enjoy simple pleasures.

“Here’s to the moments when you realize the simple things are wonderful and enough.” ~ Jill Badonsky

27. Talk less and listen more.

“Listening is an attitude of the heart, a genuine desire to be with another which both attracts and heals.” ~ J. Isham.

28. Forgive quickly.

Bear with each other, and forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13

29. Say “please” and “thank you” and mean it.

“Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use.” ~ Emily Post

30. Eat to live don’t live to eat.

The more you eat, the less flavor; the less you eat, the more flavor. ~Chinese Proverb

31. Strive for better, not perfect.

“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” –Jim Rohn

32. Learn one new thing each day.

“You learn something every day if you pay attention.” ~ Ray LeBlond

33. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for You. Psalm 9:10

34. Ask for help when you need it.

“We’re all imperfect and we all have needs. The weak usually do not ask for help, so they stay weak. If we recognize that we are imperfect, we will ask for help and we will pray for the guidance necessary to bring positive results to whatever we are doing.” — John Wooden

35. Take the stairs and add more steps to your day.

“Don’t wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take toward reaching that goal.” ~ Unknown

36. Stop complaining.

“The soul that gives thanks can find comfort in everything; the soul that complains can find comfort in nothing.” ~ Hannah Whitall Smith

37. Get rid of clutter and simplify your life.

“The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one’s hand and ask: “Does this spark joy?” If it does, keep it. If not, dispose of it. This is not only the simplest but also the most accurate yardstick by which to judge.” ~ Marie Kondō

38. Learn to say “no.”

“Just saying yes because you can’t bear the short-term pain of saying no is not going to help you do the work.” ~ Seth Godin

39. Donate things you no longer need or use.

In whatever you do, don’t let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble, and honor others more than yourselves. Don’t be interested only in your own life, but care about the lives of others too. Philippians 2:3–4

40. If you can change it – do it; if you can’t – don’t fret about it.

“How would your life be different if…You stopped worrying about things you can’t control and started focusing on the things you can? Let today be the day…You free yourself from fruitless worry, seize the day and take effective action on things you can change.” ~ Steve Maraboli

41. Be stronger than your excuses.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10

42. Laugh.

“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” ~ Victor Borge

43. Remember baby steps are still steps.

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” ~ Robert Collier

44. Savor every moment – each one is a precious gift.

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad today! Psalm 118:24

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love. 1 Corinthians 16:13–14

47. Be yourself – uniquely and wonderfully made.

I will offer You my grateful heart, for I am Your unique creation, filled with wonder and awe. You have approached even the smallest details with excellence; Your works are wonderful; I carry this knowledge deep within my soul. Psalm 139:14 (Voice)

48. Count your blessings.

“Concentrate on counting your blessings and you’ll have little time to count anything else.” ~Woodrow M. Kroll

49. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Mark 12:29–30

50. Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

“The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:31

That’s my list.
