I'm taking the Philippians' Challenge but I need help. So, I'm asking God to help me focus on the positive ... on the victory He has already won. #Positive #Hope #BlessingCounter #Bible #Prayer #Pray #BlessingBloggers

On Monday, I invited you to take the Philippians’ Challenge:

  1. Take a fast from the news and from your Twitter feed until after the mid-term elections.
  2. Grab a journal and make a list of things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable each day.
  3. Invite your family to have good news conversations at dinner each night.
  4. Do one small act of kindness every day.
  5. Pray for our nation, our leaders, and for the upcoming election.

The challenge was to do these five things … just to see what happens!

So today, I want to ask you – how’s it going?

I have to be honest with you.

I was super inspired and ready to go! But truthfully, I thought it would be easier.

I’m generally a positive and optimistic person. I love to laugh. I try to see the good in people and to look for the good in most circumstances. But old habits are just that – they’re habits and it often takes time for new good habits to replace the old bad ones.

So, I’m going to the Lord and asking for help, I thought you might want to join me.

Romans 12:2

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Father, I surrender myself to Your transforming grace and mercy. I want to become more like Jesus. I want to love like Him. I want to trust and follow Your will … Your good, pleasing, and perfect will. Your plans for me are good and full of grace. Thank you for Your loving patience and for never giving up on me. I love you, Lord!

2 Corinthians 10:3–4

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.

Father, sometimes the battle is hard. The enemy knows my weaknesses and attacks me. He sees where You are transforming me and challenges my change. But God… Oh Father, thank you for those two words! But God … You have won the war for me. You give me all I need to fight my spiritual battles. I have Your Word of Truth and the presence of Your Holy Spirit. Thank you! With You, I can focus on the positive. With You, I am victorious! I am a conqueror! I am Yours!

Isaiah 26:3–4

You will keep in perfect peace
    all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on You!
Trust in the Lord always,
for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.

Father, when the world around me spins in chaos … with Your Spirit’s help, I will keep my thoughts fixed on You and focus on the positive things You have done for me. Thank you for allowing me to trust You. Thank you for being my Rock. I have a firm foundation. I will not be shaken. Thank you for giving me Your perfect peace. In and with You … it is well with my soul.

John 8:31–32

Jesus said to the people who believed in Him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Jesus, I want to be Your faithful disciple. I want to trust You completely and faithfully follow Your teachings. Please forgive me when I fail, and make it the desire of my heart to know and love You with all I am. By Your Spirit’s power, may I know Your freedom giving truth. The truth that frees me from guilt, fear, and anxiety … from sin, death, and Satan’s power. Your saving grace has made me free and with Your help, I will focus on the positive as I embrace each day in the joy of Your presence and promise of Your salvation.

And finally, the verse that inspired the challenge…
Philippians 4:8

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Father, help me! I believe Your Word of truth! I trust Your promises. By Your grace, help me focus my heart and mind on all that is excellent and worthy of praise. Help me think about things that please You. Please help me settle myself each day to spend time alone with You in Your Word and prayer. And with the help of Your Holy Spirit, no matter what is going on around me … give me all I need to remain focused on You. In Jesus name, Amen.

If you’ve decided to take the Philippians Challenge and focus on the positive, I’d love to hear how it’s going.

What is on your list of things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable? My list is full of people … of family and friends who lift up and encourage. My list includes God’s Word and prayer. It includes smiles and laughter, strength and courage, faith and hope, grace and truth … and LOVE!

Because when you and I focus on love – sins are covered and hearts are united. And that’s a beautiful truth we can focus on … when the enemy uses his resources to defeat and divide, you and I have all we need to remain united through the power of God’s love.

We have Jesus!

We would love to pray for you.
You can leave your prayer requests here

  1. Deb – I too generally positively look at things however sometimes I can get in a rut and focus on the negative. I love the verses you chose. Thank you – I have added them to my boards. Praying for you as you work on forming new habits. Maree

So wise to go beyond just extinguishing the old and unwanted behavior by replacing it with something great!

  3. There seems to be a common theme I keep running across lately, focusing on the positive, being grateful, fasting negativity. I think this may be God’s way of getting me to sit up and listen to new lessons.
Thanks so much for sharing and hosting Deb.
    Blessings,
    Patti

  4. Oh, I love this, Deb! Thank you for these heartfelt prayers and for calling me to live out the Philippians challenge. My list includes the amazing truth that God listens when I call, that He continually rewards me with more of Himself, that He fills my life with so much good – family, friends, encouragement and help to live out His word through songs, and posts, and good books. So grateful for countingmyblessings.com which is definitely on the list. 🙂 Blessings, my friend.

  5. Thank you for the feature, Deb! What a blessing it is for me to share how God’s word makes a radical change in our lives. Thank you for hosting, friend. Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

  6. Thanks so much, Deb, for encouraging us even further today. I’m still listening to the news, but I’m totally trusting in God’s presence and acknowledging that He is in control. So glad I deactivated my Twitter account several months ago, as Facebook is difficult enough.
    Blessings, my friend!

  7. I love the Philippians’ Challenge. I may start it a few days late. I do have to say, though, I have not encountered any politics on my Twitter feed. Most of the people I follow and who follow me are runners. They are a very positive bunch of people. I enjoy interacting there.

  8. Focusing on my amazing Heavenly Father & walking in His joy… For that is my strength & I know that sounds like a Christian cliché but when in chronic pain 24×7 × 365 it is the truth 🙂
    Blessings,
    Jennifer

So good! The enemy “challenges my change.” That’s what he tried on me yesterday. But God. I’m so thankful he uses people like you to speak truth and encouragement when Satan tries to kick us where He sees God working in us.

  10. I have definitely felt a conviction to change my focus of late. laurensparks.net
