You Need to Know How God Hears Your Cries

The voices of God's children cry out from all over the world . . . yet, God hears the person behind each voice and responds to every cry.

I remember the birth of our first child like it happened yesterday.

She was born on her due date, following a mercifully manageable and unmedicated labor and delivery. Her first cry was strong and healthy, and Rev and I praised God and cried for joy as she cried over the overwhelming change of breath, sounds, and bright lights.

Over the next few days (yes, she was born back when they didn’t send you home the next day), she stayed in my room. I started to learn her unique personality as I cared for and soothed her.

The last night in the hospital the staff suggested I get a little extra sleep before beginning my 24/7 responsibilities and offered to take our girl to the nursery for the night. They promised to bring her in for feedings but in between – I could sleep.

As I was already tired both physically and emotionally, I agreed.

But then…

I could hear her crying.

On a floor filled with moms and newborns, I could hear my daughter’s cries.

I walked down the hall, approached the nursery door, knocked gently, and asked to have her back. They handed me my red-faced teary-eyed seven-and-a-half pound bundle and I whispered into her ear that I was with her and everything would be okay.

It only took a moment for her to relax against my chest as we wandered back to our room to rest.

When I think of that night, I’m reminded of how Scripture says…

God “hears my cries.”

But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from His sanctuary; my cry to Him reached His ears. Psalm 18:6

Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice. Psalm 55:17

Praise the Lord! For He has heard my cry for mercy. Psalm 28:6

My voice is not just a voice in the crowd and neither is yours.

The voices of God’s children cry out from all over the world . . . yet, He knows the person behind each voice and responds to every cry.

God knows the person behind each voice and responds to every cry. He hears your cries.

He always comes to soothe, comfort, and care for the personal needs of each of His children.

Like my precious little one who was only comforted by the sound of the voice she was growing to count on; you and I are comforted by our Father, whose voice we can count on and trust.

It’s so easy for me to look around at life changes I don’t understand. I can get anxious and overwhelmed. At least that’s what happens when I forget to cry out. When I fail to remember how intimately my Father knows me.

The voices of God's children cry out from all over the world . . . yet, God hears the person behind each voice and responds to every cry.

You Need to Know How God Hears Your Cries

My cry is one of a kind in God’s ears and so is yours.

God knows you.

I loved the process of getting to know the unique character and personality of each of my children. But it took time. That the Father, my Creator, knows everything about me is amazing.

You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

You made my whole being;
you formed me in my mother’s body.

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God.
They cannot be numbered! Psalm 139:5–6, 13, 17

The very hairs on your head are all numbered. Matthew 10:30

Have you ever looked down at an anthill and watched them scurry here and there. I think to some that’s how they imagine God looking down on the world.

But you and I are not just one of many to some higher being out there somewhere. We are the uniquely created one-of-a-kind children of a loving Father who knows every tiny detail about each of us and loves us completely.

God comes for you.

God came for us. He knew we couldn’t save ourselves. We’re messy people living in a messy world. And God came for us. Jesus came and lived among messy people, died, rose again, and gave us the Holy Spirit.

But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8

The Spirit helps us with our weakness. We do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit himself speaks to God for us, even begs God for us with deep feelings that words cannot explain. Romans 8:26

You and I needed our Father to come for us. Like helpless newborns, we are completely dependent but that’s okay . . . we have a God who loves us so much He comes to us to meet our every need.

God comforts you.

Our daughter knew my voice that night in the nursery. It was the voice she heard for months before she was born. It was the voice she needed to bring her comfort.

I said, “I am about to fall,”
but, Lord, your love kept me safe.
I was very worried, but
You comforted me and made me happy. Psalm 94:18–19

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
God is the Father who is full of mercy and all comfort. 2 Corinthians 1:3

I need to know my Father’s voice to receive the comfort He offers. So, I spend time with Him in prayer and I study His Word. I want to recognize His whispers when the screams of those around me distract and concern.

And the more I know Him, the more I trust His love and care.

The voices of God's children cry out from all over the world . . . yet, God hears the person behind each voice and responds to every cry.

He cares for you.

He knows your needs and mine. He wants what is good for us. And because of His overwhelming love and amazing grace, He hears your cries . . . each quiet sigh and sees each tear that falls.

And even when He doesn’t give me everything I want, He perfectly meets my every need.

My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to
give you everything you need.
Philippians 4:19

Give your worries to the Lord,
and He will take care of you.
He will never let good people down. Psalm 55:22

I could not leave my daughter in the hospital nursery crying without going to comfort her because I loved her so much each sob broke my heart. Our Heavenly Father loves us so much He cannot leave us to cry alone. He always comes to us with comfort and care because He is love.

Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully. 1 Peter 5:7 (AMP)

And remember…

So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him. Matthew 7:11

Great read! What Bible translation do you use?

    1. Thank you, Stephanie. I use either the New Living Translation or the New Century Version if it’s not marked. I’m so glad you stopped by. God’s blessings on your day!

  2. Mary Flaherty says:

As usual, Deb…just what I need. Going through a tough emotional time right now and trying in my own strength to rise above. Of course, it’s not working. I know my Father knows my voice, but I just want my zest for life back. I’m not sure where it went…maybe it’s thawing out from the S.A.D. winter blues…Funny how when you’re the one who is always joyful and happy and positive and encouraging, you feel like when this kind of thing hits, you’re somehow not allowed…but that’s just my pet auntie-muses, Helga and Bertha sneaking out of their boxes to taunt and berate me. Anyway, I appreciate your prayers. And I marveled at your story of how your baby knew her mama’s voice, but you, a tired mama, knew hers too.

    1. Oh, Mary, I’m sorry you’re struggling. It’s especially hard when everyone expects you to be their sunshine. I love that you’ve named your auntie-muses. I really need to do that! Continuing to pray for you, my friend!

Perfect timing! Just yesterday I was crying out to the Lord. I don’t always cry out to him, even though I go to him daily with all my concerns. But yesterday I cried out to him about a matter with my first born child. Thank you for reminding me that he does hear our cries.I love reading all of your posts Deb!! Thank you for sharing God’s word with us!!

    1. Thank you so much, Jackie! I’ve cried out for my children so many times and it’s comforting to know He hears and cares . . . and loves them even more than I do. Praying He brings you His peace and meets your child’s every need! Blessings!

    1. His love is so personal and intimate. That is the truth that gives peace and courage whatever is going on in life. Thanks, Julie! God bless you!

  6. Once again, Deb, God has spoken directly to my heart through your words and the Scripture you shared. Last week, I leaned upon the Lord as much, if not more, than any time in my life, and He heard my cries. Thanks be to God!
And I give thanks for you, my friend!

    1. Oh, Martha, you are in my prayers. He is with you, dear friend. He hears your cries and is holding you so close! Sending you big hugs!

Thank you so much for this excellent post! I loved your word picture comparing a mother knowing her child’s cry to that of our Heavenly Father knowing and responding to ours.

I still remember the feelings that welled up inside of me as I heard my son cry up the hallway in the hospital. I just wanted to run up to him and comfort him.

I leave her very blessed and encouraged.

  8. A much needed message for during a time when it’s so easy to doubt what we cannot see.

    1. I’m so glad it blessed you, Crystal! Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to leave your kind encouragement!

  9. Deb – I am so sorry, it has taken me almost a whole week to stop by and comment from #TuneInThursday linkup last week. I was away at a Conference since last week and the wifi was practically non-existent.

God knows our cry just as a mother knows her own childs cry.. how very true this is. He hears, even when we think He isn’t listening.

Again thank you for linking up last week, and I hope to see you tomorrow at #TuneInThursday

    1. No problem, Debbie! I hope you were able to enjoy your time away at the conference. Many blessings, my friend!

  10. Thank you for reminding us that we have a very personal God! He hears us, knows us, and loves us individually

  11. Hi,

I’ve been crying to my sleep for the past 3 months. I broke up with my bf of 7 years out of anger last September. He is now dating someone else. I know it was my fault to have temper but I really repent on it a lot. I know I was wrong. I’m willing to change but now my bf won’t believe me and that’s why he is not taking me back. I’ve been praying and crying to God to help me reunite with my bf. God has been so silent to me. It seems God is walking away from me. God only did good to my bf but not me. I regret all the hurtful words I’ve said to my bf. I just need a second chance to make things right. My bf is the one I want to marry.

    1. Oh, Natasha, I’m so sorry! I’m asking God to pour His peace into your heart and mind. It’s so hard. I think we all have words we wish we could take back. Know that God sees your broken heart and that He loves you. I can’t tell you what the future will look like but I know God is going before you and that He loves you! Praying for you! God bless you!

  12. well if he loves us so much why doesn’t he stop our suffering and why doesn’t he stop children from. suffering?

    1. I agree, Brendan. Suffering stinks! I believe God hates that we suffer in this broken world. I have read recently that if God removed our suffering when we followed Him … we would turn to Him for what He does for us rather than for who He is. And who He is … is the One who loves us, suffered and died for us, and gives us the strength we need to endure suffering and help one another in our suffering. It’s hard to explain but I know God is faithful. He has helped me through things I never imagined I would be able to endure and I trust Him to keep His promise to be with me always. (Matthew 28:20) He doesn’t remove suffering but He does give His children whatever they need to go through it. I’m praying and asking Him to be with you and give you whatever you need as you go through this difficult time.

  13. Thank you for what you do to change lives through the gospel! I loved what you said about the ant hill! Thank you! I might use it in a sermon this week!

    1. Thanks so much for your kind encouragement, Sam. I’m so glad this blessed you and that I was able to add a little to this weekend’s sermon. God be with you and bless you and your ministry.
