Humble and Gentle

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you,

because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30

Always be humble and gentle.
Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.
Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.
Ephesians 3:2-3

Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other.
Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.
Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you.
Instead, pay them back with a blessing.
That is what God has called you to do, and He will bless you for it.
1 Peter 3:8-9

Father, We want to follow Jesus perfect example, but we fail so often. Please help us. We want to be kind and compassionate, but we are judgmental and critical. We find fault with our brothers and sisters. We poke at the speck in neighbor’s eye and ignore the log in our own. You cover us with Your love, with Your grace and mercy. Please strengthen us to share Your love and forgiveness with everyone. Forgive us for selective reasoning and the many excuses we give for our pride. Forgive us for banding together with those who agree with us, and for condemning those who don’t. Fill us with the strength of Your Spirit. Make us more like our Lord and Savior, Jesus. In whose name we pray. Amen.

  1. This radical others-focus that permeates scripture is so hard to do for me. Sure, I have my moments of shining. But waking up, going to bed, and living in between thinking about what I can do to be humble and gentle and loving towards others – I’ve got a long way to go!

    1. I share your struggle Loren. I think it’s the place of healthy tension where we are supposed to live. If we ever feel like we’re doing it perfectly we will be lying to ourselves and guilty of pride. I just like to keep myself challenged everyday, hoping that once in a while I while have one of those shining moments. 🙂

    1. Nancy, Your comment embarrasses me, and all I could to Blake is how kind you are and that you fit that description waaaay more. You bless me! The Lord’s love just shines through you.
