“No one ever got sick and died because of too much happiness or a too-carefree life.” ~John Snyder
Amen, to that!
But in our busy get it all done lives, carefree happiness seems elusive, doesn’t it?
The secret to living a joy-filled stress-free life has everything to do with focus. More specifically . . . the object of our focus.
And that is the truth that makes carefree happiness hard to attain.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
I’ve met people who are terminally ill or have nothing of monetary value who are happy and joyful and I’ve met people in perfect health with abundant wealth who are miserable.
I’m guessing you could say the same.
So, what’s the difference?
Why is it that those who have every reason to be happy are not, and those who certainly have the right to be miserable are upbeat.
I believe they have a secret.
And that secret is where or more specifically on Whom they place their focus.
The Simple Secret to a Joy-filled Carefree Life
I’ve experienced times in my life when my grief was all I could think about. Times when my heart was breaking and it was hard to put my feet on the floor and get out of bed.
And I’ll admit that what I’m about to tell you didn’t happen overnight. It took time. Maybe even more time than it should have taken, but my focus slowly began to change.
Initially, all I could do was pray through tears and ask God to help me. Then I started asking Him to change my thinking.
I’m not sure when or how except by the Holy Spirit, but I began to realize that I struggled to change my focus and let go of my grief because subconsciously I believed letting go of my grief was letting go of hope. Admitting something I wasn’t ready to accept.
Before I could change my focus, I had to admit I was holding on to a lie.
By God’s grace and with His help, I realized my thinking was unhealthy . . . that God was able to restore my joy through blessing counting and focusing on His goodness and love.
[Tweet “God alone is the source of joy-filled stress-free living.”]
He is able to turn every humble, broken, and anxious thought into a sacrifice.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. Psalm 51:17 (NIV)
And bless each sacrifice with His healing grace.
So, I gave Him my broken heart, my foolishness, and every distracting lie.
Piece by broken piece I surrendered it all at the foot of the cross asking the Lord to replace each negative thought with His peace and joy.
And He did. Not overnight but over time.
My friend, I promise you; God is loving and faithful and He wants you and me to be joy-filled and worry free.
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Philippians 4:4
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6
And we don’t have to get there alone, we have His Spirit to help and guide us.
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22
Will you pray with me?
Father, Your Word says that You want me to be joy-filled and free of worry. That’s hard. Too often, my problems overwhelm and my wants tempt me. Please forgive me for focusing on those things that hurt my health and draw my heart away from You.
Help me place every concern at the foot of the cross. Help me trust that You will give me all I need each day.
On my own, I can’t. But with Your Spirit’s help, I can focus on You and surrender to Your plans for me.
Help me live with simple trust knowing Your grace is enough for anything I might experience now or in the future. May I, by Your grace, stand on the truth of Your Word which helps me look beyond my present circumstances and joyfully expect the amazing future You are preparing for me.
Father, I trust You, because You are trustworthy. You are faithful to every promise now and forever and I humbly thank and praise You. Amen.
Let God do the caring and the carrying for you. ~John Snyder
