Important Truth, Happiness, and the Divine Dance

We believe all kinds of untruths just because we've believed them for so long. But there is a better way . . . a way to enjoy life through the divine dance.

It’s a fact of life that if you believe something long enough it becomes your truth. It may not even be close to actual reality – but it’s your truth. Deep seeded, rooted, growing false truth.

We believe all kinds of falsehoods simply because we have mentally affirmed them repeatedly.

In her book, So Long Insecurity, Beth Moore said – “We’re going to have to let truth scream louder to our souls than the lies that have infected us.”

Many lies we believe began in childhood and grew with time and repetition.

I hate lies. Not just a little. I REALLY hate lies. So, I’m working to give up lies I’ve carried around for more years than I’d care to admit.

And I’m beginning with . . .

The lie that – Your happiness is my responsibility.

Are there people in your life who expect you to provide their happiness? Your children. Your spouse. Your parents. Your best friend.

The truth is – I don’t have the power to make anyone else happy. And neither do you.

No matter how much you and I want the people we love to be happy. No matter how much we actually love them or care about their well-being. We don’t have the power to do anything more than offer a temporary fix for whatever is causing their unhappiness.

I used to call it my efforts to make people happy – doing the “dance.”

We believe all kinds of untruths just because we've believed them for so long. But there is a better way . . . a way to enjoy life through the divine dance.

The “dance” was working to be more fun, more enthusiastic, and more entertaining for the benefit of someone else. It’s exhausting and honestly only had the slightest chance of being successful.

Recently, I read these words by Scot McKnight in 40 Days Living the Jesus Creed: “The Father who dances endlessly with the Son and the Spirit is the same Father who persistently yearns for us to join the dance.”

He writes—“Theologians often call the ‘oneness’ shared by the Father, Son, and Spirit, the ‘dance of the Trinity.’ God is love. The music of God is love. Anyone who loves God and loves others is dancing . . . to love is to walk onto the divine dance floor.”

I want that dance.

  • To love God.
  • To love others.
  • To allow God to love others through me.

I’m no longer going to believe that it’s my responsibility to frantically produce effort to accomplish the impossible task of making someone happy, no matter how much I love them.

I am simply going to love them. Because although I can’t make them consistently happy, I can love them. And loving them realizes the…

Truth is – Your happiness is your responsibility.

And happiness that is more than a quick and temporary fix is found in surrendering to the music of God, swaying to the beat of His love, and dancing on the “divine” dance floor.

When I “dance” to give happiness I may just interfere with God’s perfect invitation to the “divine” dance. I may teach people to rely on me not God.

So, I will change my focus. I will look up before I look around. I will seek God’s wisdom in my relationships and I will dance the dance guaranteed to fill me with the joy of the Lord.

Would you care to join me?

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude. ~Denis Waitley

Lead me in the path of your commands, because that makes me happy. Psalm 119:35

  1. I’m really pondering this paragraph, Deb: “When I ‘dance’ to give happiness I may just interfere with God’s perfect invitation to the “divine” dance. I may teach people to rely on me not God.” It’s hard to watch my loved ones struggle, but when I try to rescue them at the first sign of difficulty (possibly because of my own impatience), I may be hurting more than helping. I need to remember this! So glad I stopped by today from Coffee for Your Heart …

    1. Thank you Lois. I’m so glad you stopped by as well. It’s hard not to want to jump in and fix things for the people I love. Part of love is wanting happiness. I’m trying to remind myself that I want their best and I don’t always know what that is. I’m definitely a work in progress. I will probably have to reread this often. 🙂

    1. Thank You Tasha! That is my desire – to walk onto the Divine Dance Floor and dance with my Father. Amen!

  3. Oh, Deb, this is an amazing post! And, it was just what I needed to read today!

I am so good at doing that dance~

Hope you have a blessed day today~Melanie

    1. Oh Melanie, Thank you for your kind words. You made my day! God bless you!

  4. Hi Deb! I remember reading that joy comes from living in the truth. And with joy is happiness!
I also think that there is nothing more attractive, more joyful than seeing someone else live their passion, and know their goals. I guess they are not making me happy directly, but their lives make me sing and dance with the Lord!
    Blessings,
    Ceil

  5. I love that Ceil. Joy that sings and dance with the Lord over the blessings you see in others. That’s awesome!

  6. …oh, love that quote ~ “…to love is to walk onto the divine dance floor.”

    Lovely post today, Deb.
    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  7. I’m loving that first quote by McGill. Takes away the whole “I have to please everyone and make them happy” syndrome.
