Life at the End of Your Comfort Zone

What would you do if you could throw caution aside and step out of your comfort zone? I can only imagine what's waiting for you there...
I have a closet full of shoes and a drawer full of socks that I avoid wearing. I love cute shoes. I just love comfort more.

Comfort -a state of ease and satisfaction of bodily wants, with freedom from pain and anxiety.

I want comfort. Comfortable shoes. Comfortable clothes.

And above all I want – a comfortable life.

But I wonder . . . is that what God wants?

I don’t think so?

Scripture is full of examples of people God called out of their comfort zones.

NoahBuild a large boat. Genesis 6:14

Abraham – Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. Genesis 12:1

Moses – You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt. Exodus 3:10

Daniel – Face lions. Daniel 6

Elijah – Challenge the Prophets of Baal. 1 Kings 18

Disciples“Follow me” called out Jesus. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

Paul“Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.” Acts 9:15–16

Is God calling you out of your comfort zone?

Is your heart stirring?

Do you dream of going on a mission trip? Do you think about doing foster care or adopting? Do you wonder if you’re called to teach a Bible Class? Do you want to write a book or blog? Go back to school? Volunteer?

Neale Donald Walsch, author of Conversations with God wrote, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

It’s easy to stay in our routine thinking we’re comfortable—to ignore God’s whispers out of fear. But maybe, just maybe, there’s beauty, joy, and fulness of life on the other side of comfort.

Maybe it’s time to step out in faith and embrace the uncomfortable.

What I’ve noticed is that the more comfortable I get with Jesus and with letting the Holy Spirit guide & direct my life, the more willing I am to be uncomfortable in the flesh and in being brave in the spiritual realm. Comfortable in order to be uncomfortable.

    1. It goes with God’s words, “Fear not, I am with you.” When we know He is with us, obedience outside of our comfort zone is less frightening. Our peace and comfort is in Him even when our circumstances are uncomfortable. Not an easy thing to learn, but a blessing once we do.

Great thoughts! Being uncomfortable is scary but invigorating!

    1. I’m sure Haiti is always outside of your comfort zone, but a huge blessing to the people there and to you too! Thanks for being such an inspiration!

  3. This stirs me: “But maybe, just maybe, there’s beauty, joy, and fulness of life on the other side of comfort.” I think you are absolutely right, Deb! And how much beauty, joy, and fullness are we missing out on when we refuse to step out? Such richness to think upon.

    1. Thanks for visiting Becky. My prayer is to follow wherever He leads even when it’s outside of my comfort zone. He only leads us where He has already gone and prepared the way. Now to just live it out!

  4. And it feels great to step out of our comfort zone every once in a while.
