How to Never Be Afraid Again – I Promise

Sharing is caring!

Do you struggle with fear? I understand. I spent my whole life afraid of way too much. But I have found the way to never be afraid again. Here's my story.I sat looking out the window. Unable to understand the scene just out of reach. The beginning of days that would change her tender two-year old heart from carefree to anxious.

As years passed I looked back on that day and the weeks that followed as the source of my fear. I’m not sure why. No one circumstance stood out, but everything changed. In just a few days life became larger than the sheltered bubble I had always known.

Several weeks ago, the main character in one of my favorite shows said the following: “It’s not the unknown I’m afraid of, it’s the known unknown.”

Isn’t that the truth?!

We’re not afraid of things we don’t know. We’re afraid of possibilities. Of things we’ve seen or heard. Things we know.

Life experiences and the stories about life experiences are the things that make us fearful.

We don’t fear illnesses we’ve never heard about. We didn’t fear terrorism in the U.S. until 9/11. We don’t fear divorce until we know someone who has been touched by its pain. We don’t fear betrayal, pain, or a broken heart until we know how much they hurt.

How to Never Be Afraid Again

Remember, even though your future is unknown to you, it is not unknown to your heavenly Father. He loves and cares for you. He forgives you. He covers you with His mercy and grace. He knows every little detail of your tomorrow . . . of all your tomorrows.

And He has promised to never leave you alone to live a single moment on your own.

I promise!

Just in case you’re wondering, I was the little girl in the story above. Afraid . . . unless I was near my mother or father . . . I knew I was safe with them.

Dear one, you are safe with your Father. Always. He is always present and in His presence you and I can face the known unknown unafraid.

He will never allow more in your life than He is able to strengthen you to endure. I believe Him because He has carried me through things I believed would shatter me.

Jesus frequently told His followers, “don’t be afraid.”

But how? How can you and I get rid of fear when our stomachs are in knots and life feels fragile?

We replace fear with His promises.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[p] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow . . . nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38–39

“And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20

Then print out the these words, carry them with you, and read them when fear tries to take over.

Psalm 1186

    1. It was really a trust issue for me Sarah Ann. I believed that if my greatest fears happened I’d completely fall apart. And I did when I had to face one head on. BUT, God put me back together with a trust that He is able no matter what I’m going through. This place is better. Thanks for your faithful encouragement! Hugs!

I tend to worry and fear…so this post speaks to me. And it’s timely, as I’m starting a new chapter in my life…so now more than ever I need to replace that fear with God’s promises. : )

Thank you for sharing and God bless you!

  5. The known unknowns. I’m not sure I’ve thought of it that way before, but you are right, Deb! I’ve dealt with fears for much of my life but in the past few years, I’m finally settling down into these promises of grace more and more. Thanks for this shot of encouragement.
