No One Thought to Thank Him – Will You?

Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 1:9,  What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

We live in a time of ever-changing and developing technology. I often wonder what my grandparents would think of today’s world. However, Solomon wrote –  nothing is original. We may be able to get information more quickly, but the basics of life are true generation after generation.

King Solomon told the following brief story in chapter 9 of Ecclesiastes:

There was a small town with only a few people, and a great king came with his army and besieged it. A poor, wise man knew how to save the town, and so it was rescued. But afterward no one thought to thank him. v 14-15 (NLT)

Nothing new under the sun.

The story above is a familiar one. We want our rescuers to be strong, wealthy, and good-looking. We want celebrities who will make our lives comfortable and safe.

The people of Jesus day wanted a celebrity Savior who would remove the physical oppression of Roman rule; not realizing that their greater need was spiritual and one only a humble servant Savior could offer.

Nothing new under the sun.

Afterward no one thought to thank him.

We get so busy chasing after comfort and safety, we forget to thank God for the many spiritual blessings He provides each day.

Blessings like:

  • Love
  • Grace and Mercy
  • Forgiveness
  • Faith
  • Hope
  • Strength
  • Courage
  • Peace
  • Life . . . Eternal

Blessings given and demonstrated by our humble servant Savior.

Will you join me in thanking Him? Not just with words quickly spoken over a lavish meal, but with a life dedicated to glorifying Him with humble service.

Father, Thank you. Thank you. Your blessings are too many for us to count. Through Jesus, You saved us. Through the Holy Spirit, You fill our lives with spiritual blessings. You give us all we need. You are generous, kind, and good. Forgive us. We whine and complain for more. We grumble when we are uncomfortable. We settle for so much less than You want for us, because we focus on momentary things. Please fill us with Your love. Give us thankful hearts made clear by thankful living. Help us to follow Jesus example of humble service. Help us to share Your love and our blessings. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

Let us, then, always offer praise to God as our sacrifice through Jesus, which is the offering presented by lips that confess Him as Lord. Do not forget to do good and to help one another, because these are the sacrifices that please God. Hebrews 13:15-16 (GNT)

  1. It is so easy to just go through life without allowing gratitude to spill out of us. Just like we practice His presence, we must practice the art of giving thanks.
