Do You Pray for Patience? Yes? No?

Are you patient At work At home On the road Do you pray for patience Let's talk...
“In the Bible, patience is not a passive acceptance of circumstances. It is a courageous perseverance in the face of suffering and difficulty.”
 ~ Warren Wiersbe

How patient are you?

If you’re like me, it depends upon your circumstances.

I have more patience with others than I have with myself. I’m more patient if my to do list isn’t overwhelming. I’m less patient when I’m running late or I’m short on sleep. I’m more patient with the day’s first annoyance than I am with the upteenth frustration of the day.

What gets on your last nerve?

Are you going through hard times that just won’t end? An illness? An annoying coworker? Debt? Infertility? Depression? Loneliness? A rebellious child? Etc.?

[Tweet “Patience is not passive acceptance. It is courageous perseverance.“]

Patience is defined as:

1. The bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like.
2. The ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay
3. Quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence:

How do you define patience?

For me . . . patience is trust.

It is trusting God and allowing Him to be Lord of my life. It is praying about my wants and needs, and believing His will is best.

He knows me better than I know myself. If He has allowed problems they have a purpose . . . and that purpose will always include my good (even if it takes me awhile to realize it,) and His glory (if I don’t mask it with my own selfishness and tantrums).

Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: So, we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without His unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow, But the things we can’t see now will last forever. (MSG)

So, I don’t pray for patience anymore. I believe that in love, the heavenly Father knows my needs and provides for me. Although I would love Him to supernaturally inject me with patience; experience has taught me that the Lord will give me opportunities to practice patience instead.

I am so thankful He is patient with me.

You too?

What a blessing to know He loves us and continues to guide us. Even when our circumstances are difficult the Lord will give us everything we need to endure today and walk into tomorrow with faith, hope, and patience.

Everything we need to trust His timing.

Let’s talk: Do you pray for patience? What helps when you feel impatient?

  1. Deb….I pray for patience when I’m in need of it. It’s laying down the situation at His feet and trusting Him to see you through…no matter the duration or direction. Found you through The Beauty In His Grip link up. Have a good week.

    1. Hi Naomi, Thank you for visiting. I’m a bit better at giving my lack of patience to the Lord. After 8 years of secondary infertility, and a long absence of a precious child – I’m learning the hard way to trust His timing. But in the process, I have also grown to love Him more and for that I am extremely thankful.

  2. Hi Deb! I’ve learned patience through waiting. A 14 year season of infertility taught me God is in the waiting. It’s where He grooms and grows us. Happy to have connected today. I’m visiting from Unforced Rhythms.

    1. Hi Lisha, I wish I could say I learned patience through secondary infertility. I didn’t handle it very well at all. However, through His grace God has taught me patience. I haven’t liked the process, but I am thankful for His outcome. He is faithful even when I act like a spoiled child.

  3. Great post,
No I don’t pray for patience. As I grow in my walk with Christ, as I become more like Him, I grow in my patience. Some days I’m better at it than others. But thankfully God always loves me and always gives me more opportunities to learn/grow in my patience.

    1. Hi TC, I definitely think we grow in patience as we have opportunities to apply it. Some situations are easier than others, but all bring growth. I’m so thankful for received forgiveness for all my impatient moments. Blessings!
