“My home is in Heaven. I’m just traveling through this world.” ~ Billy Graham

How much time do you spend thinking about Heaven?

Have you thought about Heaven yet today?

If you’re like me, you spend most of your time thinking about whatever is making the most noise. There are plenty of things that are demanding my attention right here and right now . . . some of them good and others not so much.

Besides that, I have trouble picturing what Heaven is going to be like. But the stuff that’s right in front of me, the things I can see and touch, the things that happen or that might happen . . . that’s the stuff I think about.

But Paul invited the Colossians, and you and me, to have a new perspective…

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.  For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

Colossians 3:1–4

It’s important to remember that this is not living with our “head in the clouds.”

It is embracing God’s promises and eternal truth that, in Christ, we are already full citizens of Heaven and our eternal future is secure!

The Life Application Notes call it putting “Heaven’s Priorities into Daily Practice.”

Here are 5 Ways to Make the Priorities of Heaven a Daily Practice.

  1. Know that through the forgiveness you have received in Christ, you are safe. Nothing can separate you from God’s love. (Romans 8:38-39)
  2. Look at life from God’s perspective. (Isaiah 46:9–10)
  3. Seek the Lord and His will. (Luke 12:31)
  4. Make every effort to obey His will each day – Love God and Love Others. (Matthew 22:37–39)
  5. Remember – Christ Jesus gives us the power to live for Him now while remaining focused on our hope-filled future in Heaven. (Ephesians 3:19)

A Prayer to Live Each Day with Heaven’s Priorities

Father, thank you for loving us so much, You provided a way for us to be forgiven our sinfulness. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for making it possible for me to know You through Him. Thank you for giving me faith and for giving Your Word that I might know Your will and believe Your promises. Thank you for the promise of Heaven through faith in Jesus.

Your Word tells me that Heaven is my eternal home with You . . . that Jesus is there preparing a place for me right now. Your Word says that there will be no more pain, suffering, crying . . . no more death. (Revelation 21:4) It says that I can’t even begin to imagine what you have prepared for us because you love us so much. (1 Corinthians 2:9) And Jesus described it as Paradise. (Luke 23:43) Thank you!

Lord, thinking about Your heavenly promises helps me remember who You are and all You have done. Remembering all You have done and all that You promise to do helps me want to look at this life through the lens of Your perspective. It gives me the desire to know Your will and obey Your commands out of gratitude. And by Your grace, You have promised to give me all I need to live in victory through the power of Your Spirit.

Your love overwhelms me! I am so very thankful and humbled. Please help me make Heaven’s Priorities my the desire of my heart every single day that I might live now and forever by Your grace . . . for Your glory! In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

I invite you to join me today and spend some time thinking about the “realities of heaven where Jesus sits with Father God. I invite you to live with the priorities of heaven and the victory that has already been won over the things of this life. And I invite you to join me in praising God for making this heavenly perspective possible.

Here are several quotes that are helping me focus:

A continual looking forward to the eternal world is not a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. ~ C.S. Lewis

For the Christian, heaven is where Jesus is. We do not need to speculate on what heaven will be like. It is enough to know that we will be forever with Him. ~ William Barclay

You know, eternal life does not start when we go to heaven. It starts the moment you reach out to Jesus. He never turns His back on anyone. And He is waiting for you. ` Corrie ten Boom

Let heaven fill your thoughts instead. Because when you do, everything on earth gets placed in its proper perspective.” – Greg Laurie

On today’s note write:

By God’s grace and with His help, I have the power to live with the priorities of heaven.

May God bless you and fill you with His peace as you think about His heavenly promises today.

  1. I love this way of looking at our lives, Deb, prioritizing heaven and living each day accordingly as Jesus would wish for us to. And the quotes you shared here are wonderful reminders, too!
    Blessings!

    1. Thanks so much, Martha! I feel like I need to read it every single morning. Have a wonderful day!

  2. Bless you Deb, and this beautiful devotion, that touch my heart and spirit and soul this moment. I am holding my dear and precious 88 year old mother-in-laws hand, who is in the last hours of her life here on earth. I am certainly thinking of God and His beautiful Heaven…I will so miss this pure and genuine and joyful, dear friend, being in my life…but I have to smile as I do think on the realities of Heaven this day. I know she will be there shortly to sing with all of God’s Angels and forever more bask in the Light of our Sovereign King, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I know He is preparing to show all of His beautiful and glorious Heaven to Pat soon. My heart is so happy for her!

    1. Oh, Kathy! I am lifting up your family as you walk this time together. I always love to hear about a close relationship between a daughter and mother-in-law. I was so blessed to have mine. I asking God to hold you all close and that He will hold your MIL especially close as He walks her home. God bless you!

  3. Angela Cahill says:

Keeping our focus on heaven changes everything. We are all only passing through this life here on earth, in preparation for what awaits us, when Jesus calls us home. Our journey here is to learn from how Jesus lived, so that we might be made perfect in His love for Him and others around us. A beautiful devotional Deb, truly inspired by God’s word and your genuine love for him – thank you Deb – God bless.
