Some things seem impossible to forgive.

The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 is a perfect example.

I promised to talk about healing after forgiveness, but I felt today might be
better spent remembering and honoring.

Healing brings hope.
And we will look at the steps to take to help the healing process…

But for today we will remember.

Because acts of terrorism seem impossible to forgive.

But forgiveness does not excuse the action.
It does not remove the pain of the loss.
It does not eliminate the consequences.

Forgiveness puts its trust in God.
It hopes for the future.

So today we will…

Pray
Trust

Remember
Honor
Hope

Quotes to Remember, Honor, and Hope

We shall never forget
We shall keep this day,
We shall keep the events and the tears
In our minds, our memory and our hearts
and take them with us as we carry on. ~9/11 Memorial Website

“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” ~Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl

“September 11… I will never forget feeling scared and vulnerable… I will never forget feeling the deep sad loss of so many lives… I will never forget the smell of the smoke that reached across the water and delivered a deep feeling of doom into my gut… I will never forget feeling the boosted sense of unity and pride… I will never forget seeing the courageous actions of so many men and women… I will never forget seeing people of all backgrounds working together in community… I will never forget seeing what hate can destroy… I will never forget seeing what love can heal…” ~Steve Maraboli

My vision is blurred by grief; my eyes are worn out because of all my enemies.
Go away, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer. Psalm 6:7–9

“We will not waver; we will not tire; we will not falter, and we will not fail. Peace and Freedom will prevail.” ~George W. Bush

“If a thing is free to be good it is also free to be bad. And free will is what has made evil possible. Why, then, did God give them free will? Because free will, though it makes evil possible, is also the only thing that makes possible any love or goodness or joy worth having.” ~C.S.Lewis

Remember your promise to me; it is my only hope.
Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles. Psalm 119:49–50

“It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” ~George Washington

“What gives me the most hope every day is God’s grace; knowing that his grace is going to give me the strength for whatever I face, knowing that nothing is a surprise to God.” ~Rick Warren

Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. Ephesians 4:3–4

“To love means loving the unlovable. To forgive means pardoning the unpardonable. Faith means believing the unbelievable. Hope means hoping when everything seems hopeless.” ~G.K.Chesterton

Father, Help us to forgive the unforgivable. Comfort those who continue to grieve. Heal hurting hearts. Forgive us and draw us close to You. Unite us in faith. Unite is by Your love. Give us hope for the future. Hope that is found in You alone. To You alone be the glory now and forever. Amen.

  1. I love this one – “Those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say.” ~Pope John Paul II – thank you for this beautiful tribute!

    1. It reminds me of Billy Grahams quote – “I’ve read the end of the Book, and it all turns out okay.” That’s a paraphrase, but still true. Out God reigns. Glory! Blessings on your day!

  2. Thank you for this. Healing does bring hope! Just as forgiveness brings freedom.
