What Happened? Remember 9/11 and the Need for Prayer

Sharing is caring!

I remember dates.

Mostly good. Anniversaries of special events. New beginnings. Celebrations. Joys.

But then there are the not so good. The downright terrible. Days we’d like to forget but must remember.

Some dates pull up powerful images. Like a scrapbook of life living inside our heads. Dates. Pictures. Remembrances.

Today we remember.

9/11 Flag of Honor – Remembering those Lost

Flag of Honor - Remembering 9/11/01

Most of us remember the moment we heard the news of the attack on our country 14 years ago. We remember standing frozen in front of the television finding the images playing across the screen hard to believe.

Remember 9/11. The things that changed. The losses and pain. We all felt vulnerable. Less secure. Less trusting.

But we rallied together. And in the months following . . . people loved on each other and on this place we call home.

America

I sometimes wonder what has happened in the past 14 years.

When did the decline begin? When did we start noticing our differences over our similarities? When did we turn on each other? When did we get so angry?

And then I wonder . . . what will it take to turn it around.

Some look to leaders believing a “new” Washington will “make America great again.” But I’m not so sure.

Although leadership is important this problem will not be solved in the halls of congress or the oval office.

This is a heart problem that can only be solved on our knees when we drop indignation and put on humility. In prayer with repentance. Surrendering everything to God.

Where our “War Room” pleas lay us open . . . allowing God to change our homes, neighborhoods, office buildings, schools, and churches.

Pray for AmericaPray for America

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. 1 Timothy 2:1–6

1. Pray that God will turn hearts and minds back to Him . . . that there will be a revival of faith in our nation.

2. Pray that God will strengthen our families.

3. Pray that God will protect us and give us peace.

4. Pray that God will increase our love for Him.

5. Pray that God will strengthen us to do a better job of loving each other.

6. Pray that God will guard and protect the hearts and minds of our children.

7. Pray that God will give us leaders who will honor and glorify Him.

8. Pray that God will strengthen our churches.

9. Pray that God will help us to care for those in need.

10. Pray that God’s name will be glorified and Jesus professed as Lord and Savior by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We put our hope in the LordHe is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. Let your unfailing love surround us, Lordfor our hope is in you alone. Psalm 33:20–22

Quotes to Inspire

“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.”
—Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl

“We will never forget 911. And neither will future generations. The story, images, and human cost will always conjure up horror and tears but will also forever be identified with stories of incredible bravery, determination, and personal sacrifice.” ~Joe Gandelman

“I will never forget seeing what hate can destroy… I will never forget seeing what love can heal…”
― Steve Maraboli

Our country needs so much prayer. We have slipped so far. I’m amazed that someone was jailed for staying true to their religious beliefs here in America. We need to pray more for this land! Thank you for the reminder this morning.

  2. Michele Morin says:

What a great post! You’ve reminded us of the tragedy of 9/11, but pulled our hearts into a posture of prayer. Thank you.

  3. Elizabeth says:

Thank you for this, Deb. I will gratefully use your prayer prompts as I cry out to God this morning. So glad to have found you, your site, and this lovely party just yesterday. Now I know where I’ll be every Friday, God-willing! 🙂

  4. May we always remember this day, yes, and may God heal this once great nation.
    Blessings, Deb!

The only comment that seems appropriate is AMEN! I pray in agreement with you, and all of our sisters and brothers today. I was too young to remember where I was when Kennedy was shot, but I will always remember 9-11.

Good morning, Deb. My husband and I were just discussing what the weeks were like immediately following 9/11, how flags flew in union and arms of all sorts linked as one. Things are different now. But prayer remains the same. It remains powerful, just like our God. Your list is good. I’ll be praying by it. Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

  7. Love this, Deb. Sharing it with the my online prayer group. 🙂

  8. Thanks, Deb, for this much needed reminder. Fourteen years ago we fell to our knees in the midst of our tears and fear and our churches overflowed. It remained that way for several weeks and then for so many everything returned to the way it was before 9/11. I pray that we do not need another tragedy to call us to account for what the Lord used to remind us of what our position is to be: Watchmen on the Wall!!

  9. Remembering, but more than that…praying and even forgiving are what Jesus calls us to do.
Hatred and unforgiveness hurts us more than it does those who we say we won’t forgive. I know this for myself so turn to God in this moment.
