Thankful Thirty – God is Shelter in the Storm

Sharing is caring!

When you are afraid and anxious, when life's storms rage . . . God is your Shelter. Here are truths and promises, you are safe in His presence...

As I sit here finger flying across the keyboard, the weather is foul outside. It’s cold, rainy, windy, dark and gloomy.

All things that make me thankful for a safe warm house – for shelter.

But what about my heart and mind when the “weather” is foul. When I struggle with depression and anxiety. When fear rears its ugly head. When envy or quick judgments from comparisons and selfishness bring out my dark and gloomy.

That’s when I run to the shelter of the Lord. Shelter for my thoughts and emotions. Shelter from life’s storms. And in grace it doesn’t matter whether I’ve caused the foul weather, someone else has, or just plain old evil . . . the Lord is my shelter. My protector.

But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; You are my glory, the One who holds my head high. Psalm 3:3

The Lord my Shelter/Refuge – Jehovah Machsi (Psalms 91)

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LordHe alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust Him. Psalm 91:1–2

He shelters you and me by the power of His Spirit. He speaks words of truth over us. He calms and shelters with words of hope and love.

Storms will happen, but the One who shelters is always close.

When you are afraid and anxious, when life's storms rage . . . God is your Shelter. Here are truths and promises, you are safe in His presence...

Quotes –

“Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide? If He is, you don’t need to search any further for security.” ~Elisabeth Elliot

But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things You do. Psalm 73:28

“There is something you can’t fix, can’t heal, or can’t escape, and all you can do it trust God. Finding ultimate refuge in God means you become so immersed in his presence, so convinced of His goodness, so devoted to His lordship that you find even the cave is a perfectly safe place to be because he is there with you.” ~John Ortberg

Show me Your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By Your mighty power You rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies. Guard me as You would guard Your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of Your wings. Psalm 17:7–8

“In Jesus Christ on the Cross there is refuge; there is safety; there is shelter; and all the power of sin upon our track cannot reach us when we have taken shelter under the Cross that atones for our sins.” ~A.C.Dixon

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. Psalm 5:11

Whatever your storm find shelter in Jehovah Machsi – The Lord your Refuge.

Father, Thank you for Your shelter in life’s storms. When my heart hurts. When fear strikes and anxiety increases You are my Refuge and Strength. Forgive me for failing to look to You when I feel crushed and battered. Your forgiveness shelters me. Your grace and mercy lift me. You cover me with Your love. Thanks and praise now and forever. In Jesus name. Amen.

  1. This sentence made me stop and breathe, Deb. “And in grace it doesn’t matter whether I’ve caused the foul weather, someone else has, or just plain old evil . . . the Lord is my shelter. My protector. But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; You are my glory, the One who holds my head high. Psalm 3:3”
It was a gift of grace, today. Thank you!
    Blessings!

  3. Hi Deb,

I’m so thankful that I can find shelter in the Lord. It’s when I come to the end of myself that I find the Lord waiting patiently for me to come to Him. Trust is the word I’ve focused on this year.

    Blessings!

    Kim
