How a Bold Question About Money Actually Changed Our Lives

3 / 26 / 213 / 26 / 21
A wise friend once challenged us with a bold conversation about money that changed our lives and turned out to be a blessing full of wisdom. #Stewardship #Money #LoveMoney #CountingMyBlessings #BlessingBloggers

Have you ever had someone say something that annoyed you at the time but later you realized that God used that one comment to plant a seed and change your perspective?

This one occurred when Rev was a Seminary student assigned to do hands on instruction at the church where I was teaching 3rd grade. One of his assignments was making shut-in calls with an older gentleman from the church.

Harry was respected and loved by everyone but he had this one habit that could get on a person’s nerves. He referred to everything he “owned” as “belonging” to God. He drove God’s car and listened to God’s radio and so on and so forth.

So, Rev was a little put off when Harry asked him about our giving habits. We were poor students. I mean really poor students who were doing the best to make ends meet and we believed we were giving to the best of our ability.

But Harry challenged us in that conversation to 1. think of everything we had as a gift from God, and 2. faithfully give at least 10% of our income.

And Harry’s bold challenge about money changed our lives.

In Luke 16, Dr. Luke shared the way Jesus challenged His followers to change the way they thought about their finances.

No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

Luke 16:13

When you and I think about our jobs and our incomes as blessings . . . gifts from God to be used generously for His glory. It changes everything. We start looking at Him with greater gratitude and at everything we have as ways to love others for His glory.

A Prayer to Trust God
with the Blessing of Money

Lord, You are Creator, Redeemer, Helper, and Friend. You are Lord of all! All we have is the result of Your loving care and creative hand. Your blessings extend to every corner of our lives.

Please forgive me for valuing things of this world more than I do the things that last forever. You have blessed me with all I need now and forever.

You forgive me and cover me with your grace, mercy, and love. You give me peace and joy, courage and strength, protection and provision. Please help me remember that all I have is a gift from Your hand and please help me to faithfully care for and use all I have been given in ways that will give Your glory and reflect Your love. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

An important point to remember when it comes to our attitudes about money is…

Money is a hard and deceptive master. Wealth promises power and control, but often it cannot deliver. Great fortunes can be made—and lost—overnight, and no amount of money can provide health, happiness, or eternal life.

Life Application Bible Notes

Stewardship is “the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.”

All we have is only ours to use and the best way to do that is to prayerfully trust and obey God’s will and use all we have for His glory. And I have to tell you that change in attitude turned out to be an amazing blessing!

On today’s note write:

Everything is a gift from God to be used for His glory.

May you be blessed today as you prayerfully invite God to guide your use of all have.

Day 27 – God, Please Help Me to be Wise with Money

12 / 18 / 18

I shared last week that the number one prayer request on the Blessing Counters Pray Page is one that asks for God to heal broken relationships. The next most asked for prayer is one for God to provide help at a time of financial distress.

So today, we’re going to pray about our finances and ask…

I'm praying and asking God to make us wise with money because so many people I know find themselves in a state of need and worry about their finances. #Money #prayer #Faith #BlessingCounter

God, Please Help Me to be Wise with Money

Father, I want to be wise with money and handle my finances in ways that please You. Help me.

Jesus said, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:19–21

Father, Please help me. Teach me contentment and may a closer relationship with You and with the people You give me be the treasures I want. Help me place the highest value on the things that will last forever.

Solomon wisely wrote…

Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!  Ecclesiastes 5:10

Grant me true peace and happiness found in a satisfied life.

Paul wrote…

Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5

If I have a roof over my head, food to eat and clothes to wear … may I enjoy contentment. If I compare myself to others, please keep me from envying those who have more but faithfully see those in need and who are living without life’s basic necessities.

Your Word says…

Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do. Deuteronomy 15:10

And I know that those blessings may or may not be monetary … but I will trust You to meet every need. Philippians 4:19

Your presence. Matthew 28:20 and Psalm 139:7–10
Your peace. John 14:27
Your provision. Matthew 6:28–33

I can trust Your love. I can trust You to care for me.

I can honor You with my money.

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Proverbs 3:9

Father, please make me wise with money.

May I balance the difference between my wants and my needs. May I work … yet, remember it’s important to take time to rest. May I value my relationships over the accumulation of stuff. And give a heart of gratitude for all the countless ways You have provided for me in the past.

I surrender my worry and fear to You trusting that You will give me courage and strength to live today in Your presence and for Your glory.

In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

I'm praying and asking God to make us wise with money because so many people I know find themselves in a state of need and worry about their finances. #Money #prayer #Faith #BlessingCounter

How to Manage Your Money with Godly Wisdom

3 / 23 / 165 / 21 / 18

A list of 10 godly ways to manage your money and enjoy God's blessings with stewardship and joy!

My dad likes to tell the story of how he almost tried to talk me out of taking my first teaching position because the salary was so small.

I had just graduated from college and received a call to teach at a small Christian school in St. Louis, where Rev would be attending seminary. I wanted to teach and I needed a job.

Truthfully, I didn’t feel like I had many options.

So, I accepted that low-paying position … just glad to have a job doing something I loved.

When Rev and I looked ahead at our lives together, we knew we’d chosen careers in ministry . . . we weren’t expecting to get rich.

Because our income was so small we knew we had to budget very carefully.

We didn’t have credit cards; so, we couldn’t spend what we didn’t have which in retrospect was a blessing.

We not only managed … we were happy.

Then we had an early financial lesson…

Part of Rev’s Seminary training included something called Field Work at a local congregation and one of his assignments was to make evangelism calls with one of the members of our church.

Harry was a wise, kind man whom Rev and I both loved and respected.

While they were out making calls, Harry asked, “Do you and Debbie tithe?”

Tithe? We had no money. We were barely making ends meet.

Rev replied, “We give, but not a tithe. We plan to as soon as we can.”

Harry said something we will never forget, “No you won’t. You’ll never tithe if you wait for the right income. Tithing is not a money issue it’s a faith issue.”

Rev’s initial reaction was to feel defensive, although he didn’t say anything. But Harry’s words had planted an important seed that inspired a very important and much needed discussion as soon as he got home.

And…

We started tithing that weekend.

Sure we had to rework our budget a bit, but it was so worth it. It was a faith commitment that we praise God for helping us make.

Money is a huge issue for everyone. Whether you have a little or you have a lot … as individuals and especially as couples, money is a big deal and God knew it would be.

Thankfully, He didn’t leave us to figure it out on our own, He gave us lots wise direction.

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10

A list of 10 godly ways to manage your money and enjoy God's blessings with stewardship and joy!

10 Ways to Manage Your Money with Godly Wisdom

1. Remember everything belongs to God.

You and I are simply stewards for a time.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to Him. Psalm 24:1

2. Pray. Ask God for wisdom to manage your money well.

Part of recognizing that it’s all God’s is asking Him for direction to be a good steward of His blessings.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6

3. Make a budget and stick to it.

If you’re in debt, work to get out of it.  Don’t spend what you don’t have.

The rich rules over the poor. The man who uses something that belongs to someone else is ruled by the one who let him use it. Proverbs 22:7

4. Know where you spend your money.

Take a few months to a year to document every penny spent so you will know where you can make changes in an emergency. Rev and I did this one for several years and although I’ll admit I wasn’t a fan, it helped us know what we could eliminate when we needed to rein in our spending.

A wise person should have money in their head, but not in their heart. ~Jonathan Swift

5. Take care of what you have.

New always seems attractive and exciting but part of being a good steward is simply caring for the blessings you already have.

Learn all you can about your sheep. Take care of your goats the best you can. Neither wealth nor nations last forever. Proverbs 27:23–24

6. Don’t compare what you have with your friends and neighbors.

You and I will always want bigger and better if we’re comparing and envious of what the people around us enjoy.

“When the Lord makes it clear you’re to follow Him in this new direction, focus fully on Him and refuse to be distracted by comparisons with others.” ~Charles R. Swindoll

7. Don’t shop for recreation and entertainment.

Many unnecessary purchases happen while you and I are out just “looking.”

“Living with intention means saying no to the things that aren’t important to us so we can say yes to what matters most.” ~Crystal Paine

8. Start a savings plan.

Even a small one will help you prepare for future needs or emergencies. Rev and I put 10% into our savings when we started giving 10% back to God.

“Financial peace isn’t the acquisition of stuff. It’s learning to live on less than you make, so you can give money back and have money to invest. You can’t win until you do this.” ~Dave Ramsey

9. Tithe!

It will bless you in every way. Our faith commitment to give 10% years ago came with a hope that someday we’d be able to give even more than a tithe. By God’s grace, there have been many years when He has made that possible.

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops. Proverbs 3:9

10. Praise God!

If you are reading this. If you live in a house with clean running water, windows, heat, food and a way to prepare it . . . you’re rich! You are blessed! So many people around the world live without things you and I take for granted. Thank and praise God and be generous with those in need.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

The real measure of your wealth is how much you’d be worth if you lost all your money. –Anonymous

The best part of managing your money with Godly wisdom is that it comes with His peace and contentment.  No amount of money or luxurious possession is worth that sacrifice.

Leave your prayer requests…

and stop to pray one or two of the requests listed.
