A Tale of Secrets – Motherless by Erin Healy

People keep secrets. Some good. Some bad.
“This is truth: we all tell the stories that we want to believe. We tell them for so long that we forget what we really know. Occasionally we convince others to believe them too.” ~Motherless
Do you enjoy a good mystery?
Mysteries are born of secrets. The best mysteries are full of unexpected twists and turns that catch us by surprise and characters who keep us guessing.
I was invited to review Motherless, by Erin Healy. Since I love a good mystery and Erin Healy is also known for books she co-authored with Ted Dekker, I quickly agreed to read and review it here.
Motherless pulled me immediately and kept me fully engaged with every page turn. The characters are complex and imperfect. I liked that. And Healy’s ability to describe both characters and locations made the story come alive visually.
“Motherless is a richly layered mystery about the power of perception–and deception–among people seeking forgiveness for irreversible sins.”

Book Summary:

The tale of two young adults trying to solve the mystery of their mother’s seventeen-year-old suicide.
A whispering voice at the back of my mind reminds me that I’ve been this way for some time. Dead, that is.

The dead have a very broad view of the living, of actions performed out of sight, of thoughts believed to be private. I would know. Losing both parents is a trial no child should endure, and Marina and Dylan have endured enough. They deserve the one thing I could never give them: a mother’s love.

A mother’s love, and the truth.

Reader Review Quotes:

“Motherless is about more than two siblings dealing with the loss of their mother. It is about the unfairness of pain. The emptiness caused by loss. The weight of sin and the consequences of choices. The insidious damage of secrets and lies. Fractured families that are restored in unexpected ways. And the healing antiseptic of truth.” ~Mary
“With her typical aura of mystery, Healy weaves a wild tale of loss, secrecy, and two children trying to figure it all out.” ~Josh
“Motherless is part supernatural mystery, part romance from beyond the grave, and will keep you guessing until the very last minute. Erin Healy is an artist who paints magnificent images with her words.” ~Thomas Locke
“Motherless by Erin Healy is the suspense filled mystery of the year!” ~Karen
