I have terribly dry and itchy skin. Winter is the worst, but it seems like I spend half of my waking hours and my half awake hours scratching. It also doesn’t help that I am an easily agitated fidgeter. Doesn’t that make you want to sit down and spend a relaxing afternoon with me? 😉
I am always on the look out for the perfect salve that will soothe and calm my sensitive exterior . . . a lotion/potion that not only hydrates but one which will provide real and lasting relief. So I search and read reviews. I buy and I try.
The truth is my interior is just as bad. Restless agitation over problems, real or perceived, can initiate my foolish search for things to calm and my agitated restlessness.
Can you relate?
I believe so many of us rush from spiritual “product” to “product” looking for answers. Our longing souls and guilt ridden spirits need relief. So we search for answers and study reviews. We buy and we try.
A bit of this and a morsel of that . . . and nothing heals and comforts.
Then we come to Christmas and we get caught up in the trappings. We look for peace and good will but we’re hurried and stressed. We call it the most wonderful time of the year, but all the things we hope will satisfy leave us lacking and wanting until . . .
We approach the manger and see the One who is the answer.
The Perfect Salve – The Balm in Gilead
Jeremiah once asked, “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?” Jeremiah 8:22
Isaiah spoke God’s promise, “I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to them, creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord. “And I will heal them.” Isaiah 57:18-19
And Peter told of what he had seen and heard, “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by His wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
The One Who Soothes Souls – Jesus
Jesus said, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30
Are you: Worried? Agitated? Guilt-ridden? Sad?
Do you need: Hope? Joy? Peace? Comfort? Forgiveness?
Jesus is the perfect salve. He is the One who is able to heal our hurting hearts and settle our restless spirits.
Jesus is Christmas.
So stop for a moment. Breathe. Listen.
Angels proclaiming His birth to humble shepherds, “Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them (the shepherds), and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said, “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Luke 2:9-11
Come to the manger and celebrate. Healing. Forgiveness. Love.
