7 Simple Prayers that will help you when you're overwhelmed and don't know what to pray.

Do you ever go into your prayer time at a loss for words?

I can remember times when I felt so overwhelmed by life that I didn’t know where to begin. I wanted to lean into the Lord in prayer but I just had no words.

Since I thought there might be a possibility you occasionally find yourself without words when it’s time to pray, I thought I’d write 7 simple prayers to help us both.

7 Simple Prayers that will Help When You Have No Words

1. Lord, Help me trust You.

Proverbs 3:5–6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take.

Father, forgive me. I’m quick to ask my friends for advice and quicker to worry; yet, I’m slow to turn to Your Word or come to You in prayer. Maybe trusting with all my heart is the problem. I’m sorry. I want to surrender myself completely and trust that Your will for me always comes from Your love. Thank you for using this time to remind me just how very much I need You. And I do need You, Lord. Help me, by the power of Your Spirit. Amen.

2. Lord, I praise You.

Psalm 86:12

With all my heart I will praise You, O Lord my God.
I will give glory to Your name forever,
for Your love for me is very great.
You have rescued me from the depths of death.

Father, Even if You never did another thing that blessed my life … the amazing gift of Jesus is my everything. You took my punishment and suffered for my sins. You created a beautiful home for us here that is full of wonder. A home so beautiful that we can only begin to imagine the one You describe as our eternal home. Father, I praise You for who You are … the Great, I AM; El Shaddai, Savior, and Lover of my Soul. I will give glory to Your name forever! Amen.

3. Lord, please help my loved one.

1 Timothy 2:1

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.

Father, I lift up my loved one to You. Please help them. They are hurting and I am anxious for them. This season of their lives is such a heavy burden to carry. I ask that You would remove this illness/problem. I ask that you will heal and restore them. Please Lord, be with them. You promised that You would help us carry our burdens. “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)  My loved one is weary and needs You. Draw them close by the power of Your love. Amen.

4. Lord, Please forgive me.

Psalm 86:5

O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.

Father, I’m so very sorry. I messed up … again! Forgive me for the countless times I’ve confessed and asked You to forgive this same sin! I try so hard to follow Your will for me. I want desperately to honor You with my life. Please help me. Grant me Your mercy and grace. Cover me with Jesus’ righteousness and grant me the strength I need to reject temptation as I completely trust Your perfect promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

5. Lord, please help me forgive _________.

Ephesians 4:26

And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

Father, You know _________ has gotten on my last nerve. I am so angry! But I don’t have to let my emotions to control me. Feelings are a gift from You and so many of them help me enjoy and experience life. Love, happiness, and enthusiasm make each day better. The truth is, I also experience fear, hate, grief, and anger … feelings that are the result of sin in the world. Please forgive for letting anger control me. Help me, choose my words carefully and by your grace, help us work through this problem with grace and understand. In Jesus name. Amen.

6. Lord, Heal and restore our nation.

2 Chronicles 7:14

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

Oh, Father, our nation needs You. Please forgive us. We sacrifice our children at the altar of selfishness. We have distorted the meaning of freedom and eliminated Your will from so much of our lives. We have turned from Your commands and doubted Your promises. We fail to love our neighbors as You desire. And that’s just the beginning. Help us turn away from all wickedness. Forgive us. Heal us. Bless us with leaders who follow You and by Your grace restore our land. In Jesus name. Amen.

7. Lord, Increase my faith!

Ephesians 3:17

Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.

Lord, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, give me deep roots into Your grace. Thank you for making Your home in my heart. Please help me love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. May I study Your Word faithfully and trust Your promises. “Lord, I believe. Please help me overcome my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24) I surrender my life to You Lord. Help me live each day for Your glory. In Jesus name. Amen.

  1. Love this list, Deb, especially about praying for our nation. I don’t do that often enough, and it’s a good prescription for when the news brings me down. Pinning and tweeting this wonderful post!

I am sure the Lord has used you today to speak to me. I am in a low state spiritually and I really needed to read your deep thoughts and they have lifted me and I’ve run them off to read in my quiet moments. They will help me tremendously. Bless you.

    1. Thank you for the prayers 🙏 ❤️. My husband is having a colonoscopy today. He is healthy @ 75 years of age. We want him to come through this procedure quickly without side affects and a good report. In Jesus’ name.

  4. Deb, this is such a wonderful post. I so appreciate when God brings a Scripture to mind when words fail me. Truly we can find a Scripture to pray for and in every situation. Glad for the reminder!

  5. Rodney Snellen says:

Love your website, count your blessings, my wife and I add this to our morning devotional which has added to our blessings, thank you!

We’re asking for prayer for my son (Nick) and his young family. He recently lost a very good job and at age 38 he’s finding it difficult to find employment that will pay the bills. He’s currently in contact with a company one state away, if this is the right job we’re praying God will open that door if not that He has something better.
That you again for your prayers!

  6. Deb – I love your posts. When I am in need of a verse, this is where I turn. Thank you!

Sometimes my prayer time consists of only speaking the name of “Jesus.” It seems as soon as I get his name out the tears flow.

    Thank you!!

    Blessings to you, Deb!

  10. Deb, how timely is this that I just wrote about praying wordless prayers from the deep of my soul. But to know scriptures to say at a certain time can be so helpful. I love reading the Psalms aloud too.

  11. Kim Jolly says:

Deb, thank you for these prayer suggestions. Sometimes it is so hard to pray, to find the words we need. I’m also thankful to have the Holy Spirit pray when there really are no words.

    Blessings,

    Kim

Thankyou for blessing us with the simplicity of prayer!
I’ve struggled many times to pray, simply because I’m not good at communicating!

    1. I think many of us struggle at times to put our words into prayer. I love that even when we don’t have the words, God hears our hearts. Here is a post I wrote about God hearing the cries of our hearts – You Need to Know How God Hears Your Cries. God bless you!
