Would You Rather be Wise or Famous

Sharing is caring!

With so many people chasing after fame and fortune through reality television, I thought it might be interesting to ask – would you rather be wise or famous?

So that we can be sure we are on the same page let’s look at the dictionary definitions of each.

Wise – Having the ability to discern and judge properly as to what is true or right.

Famous – Having a widespread reputation, usually favorable; renowned or celebrated.

If wealth was added to fame would that change your answer?

I looked for quotes from the rich and famous to see what some of them had to say:

Fame….

Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident, and riches take wings. Only one thing endures and that is character. ~Horace Greeley

Fame doesn’t end loneliness. ~Claire Danes

Money and fame made me believe I was entitled. I was wrong and foolish. ~Tiger Woods

It is strange to be known so universally and yet to be so lonely. ~Albert Einstein

Wisdom….

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. ~John Wooden

The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common. ~Ralph Waldo

The God of this world is riches, pleasure, and pride. ~Martin Luther

From the Apostle Paul:

He is so rich in kindness and grace that He purchased our freedom with the blood of His Son and forgave our sins. He has showered His kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1:7-8

I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ Himself. In Him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:2-3

And from the wisdom of Solomon,

Stay close to wisdom, and she will keep you safe. Love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is best. So get wisdom. No matter what it costs, get understanding. Value wisdom, and she will lift you up. Hold her close, and she will honor you. Proverbs 4:6-8

So, which is it? Fame or wisdom?

One last thing to think about….

Are you thinking with an eternal perspective? Because 10,000 years from now, 1,000 years from now, 100 years from now all of your fame and riches will be only a memory, but wisdom . . . the wisdom that comes through faith in Christ that is something that will last forever and always.

Father, grant us the grace to seek wisdom and to know Your truth. Amen.

  1. Uh-oh, It’s a bad sign (or maybe a good sign?) when you’re already convicted by the blog title – and then I went on and it just kept getting better and better. I absolutely loved your quotes. I’m going to save them so I can read them again. Thanks for the good and necessary word this morning, Deb!

  2. Barb, You made me smile. Bloggers are constantly fighting the urge to build our readership and get our name out there. I know I needed this reminder. Glad it helped you too.

Praying daily to do it all to the glory of God, That takes lots of His grace in daily doses.

  3. Can I be both? Solomon was! 🙂 Of course, his went to his head, but I’m sure I could keep mine under control. LOL
