10 Ways to Celebrate National Honesty Day
It’s National Honesty Day –
Celebrated on April 30, it was invented by M. Hirsh Goldberg, who chose the last day of April since the first day of that month, which is April Fools’ Day, celebrates falsehoods.
M. Hirsh Goldberg, former press secretary of Maryland and writer of many novels, created the holiday in the early 1990s while writing the first draft and researching for his book The Book of Lies: Fibs, Tales, Schemes, Scams, Fakes, and Frauds That Have Changed The Course of History and Affect Our Daily Lives.
I started researching honesty by Googling the words “everyone lies,” and found the following quote in Scientific Proof Everyone Lies:
But virtually everybody—yes, even you—fibs a little here, a little there. We claim higher losses on insurance claims, overestimate our billable working hours, and make other small but sneaky claims to maximise our gains. It’s engrained in human nature to say things that result in positive outcomes, even if they’re not entirely true.
What do you think?
How strict are your honesty rules?
Do you exaggerate? Do you flatter? Do you omit truth to mislead? Do you deny the truth? Do you fib? Do you lie?
I’ve challenged myself with these questions lately. I hate lying. So, I’m asking myself if I’m putting exaggeration, flattery, truth avoidance, denial, and fibbing in the same category.
What the Bible says:
Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it. Psalm 34:13–14
Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. Ephesians 4:24–25
There is grace.
Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
Praise God!
Now let’s turn around and look at the topic of the day.

Great advice and insight, Deb. Speaking of integrity and being whole, I read a book recently by that name (Integrity) and he associated it with integrated character and wholeness. You have the integrity to stand up against whatever comes your way. Thanks so much.
Thanks Jason. That’s a great point. Being the same no matter where we are and who is with us. My husband has had people upset with him because he didn’t identify himself as a pastor and they were embarrassed over their words and actions. Oh to be faithful and consistent . . . that is my prayer. Blessings!
Love this, what an interesting day to celebrate and be challenged by and sucha great way to end the month!
Thanks Dawn, I really love finding out about all the random holidays. Who knew there was Honesty Day? 🙂 Now the goal . . . to make everyday Honesty Day! Blessings!
Hmmm. I think my honesty is 8.5 on a scale of 1-10.
