Awe is the Answer – Do You Know the Question?
Awe is the overwhelming feeling of reverence, respect, fear, and wonder produced by that which is grand, sublime, or extremely powerful.
Awe = wonder & respect mixed with fear. Not fear that hides, but bows in humble reverence.
Questions –
We have this one life. I wonder if we’ve turned it on its head?
Who or what do we revere? Who or what do we fear? Whose opinions matter most? Who influences thoughts and actions? Who receives respect?
I wonder . . . Have we replaced awe with skepticism and idolatry? I wonder if He still takes our breath away.
Bible Verses –
The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. He assigned the sea its boundaries and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs. Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of Him. For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at His command. Psalm 33:6–9
They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to Him. Mark 10:32
Quotes –
By Louis Giglio:
“God calls each and every star by name. It’s not likely He has forgotten yours.”
“Admitting we are not God—not in control, not running anything, not responsible for everyone’s well-being, not the solution for everything and everyone, not at the center of all things—doesn’t belittle us; it frees us.” (I am Not but I Know I AM)
“When God is not greatly praised, it’s only because we don’t think He’s that great of a God. When our worship is small, it is because our concept of God is small. When we offer God little-bitty sacrifices, it’s because we have somehow reduced Him in our hearts to a little-bitty God. Our vision has become clouded, our hearts distracted. As a result, our lives shrivel into insignificance and meaninglessness. We just bump along in this mass of humanity, having no real clue what life is all about. We fret. We get depressed. We worry and get bent out of shape. We go down all kinds of dead end paths as we try to accomplish everything by ourselves. Sometimes leading to irreversible destruction.”
“God is huge! He is ginormous! He is greater than every thought we have ever had of Him.” (Indescribable)

The answer – He is awesome. He is worthy. And He loves you.
Awe is the answer. Awe for the One who loves you so much He did it all, creation through forever, for you.
Now that should take your breath away.
Words fail me.
Thank you Bill! God bless you!
hey Deb. I hope you didn’t see me as being glib or “short.” Sometimes when I consider the Awesomeness (the only one I use that word about) of God, I am speechless. Words literally fail me. Your post brought me to that.
That is exactly the way I took it. I am humbled. Thank you!
Hi Deb! I love that first quote from Giglio! It’s short, sweet and to the point.
What an awesome thing to know that God loves us all the same and is with us in the same way. Everyone! That is worthy of AWE!
I’m short of breath!

I agree Ceil. When I think of His undeserved love, care, compassion, grace, etc. I can’t help but be filled with awe for Him. Blessings to you!
One of my favorite passages of scripture is Psalm 104. Read that and consider God’s majesty – it always gets me pumped up!
May the glory of the Lord endure forever. Amen. I love all the details about creation and the way He sustains it. His majesty takes my breath away. Thanks Loren!
Hi Deb- visiting from Thought Provoking Thursdays… and this post truly is thought provoking! The word “awesome” has lost it’s edge in our North American culture, (pretty much everything is awesome!) so it is refreshing and humbling to take a moment and ponder how utterly awesome God is, in every way. Thanks so much!
My breath is duly taken away as I stand in awe of Him, our Creator God, our salvation!
Blessings, Deb!
He takes my breath away and moves me to tears so much! He is truly AWESOME, and I am glad He gave us the gift to worship Him to bring us back to that humble placed when we have indeed strayed.
Blessings,
I am in awe of Him!
Thank you for the beautiful post.
What a beautiful way to look at things… I’ve never seen such a good explanation of ‘fear of God’ even if that’s not the main point of the post. It’s something I think about often and this helped me 🙂 Thank you!!
