I decided to save my original post for today to stop and honor the life and faith of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

His message of love and forgiveness is one you and I need to raise up in this season of antagonism and anger. We are more alike than we are different. My prayer is that we will make every effort to focus on those things we have in common and pray for patience and understanding in our differences.

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all. Ephesians 4:2–6

May we follow Dr. King’s example and work together with all God’s people using His gifts to live free of prejudice and discrimination.

Quotes

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

[Tweet ““Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude.” ~MLK”]

“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.”

“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it.”

“Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man’s sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.”

“I have decided to stick to love… Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

Prayers

O God, make us willing to do your will, come what may. Increase the number of persons of good will and moral sensitivity. Give us renewed confidence in nonviolence and the way of love as taught by Christ. Amen.

God, we thank you for the inspiration of Jesus. Grant that we will love you with all our hearts, souls, and minds, and love our neighbors as we love ourselves, even our enemy neighbors. And we ask you, God, in these days of emotional tension, when the problems of the world are gigantic in extent and chaotic in detail, to be with us in our going out and our coming in, in our rising up and in our lying down, in our moments of joy and in our moments of sorrow, until the day when there shall be no sunset and no dawn. Amen.

We thank you for your church, founded upon your Word, that challenges us to do more than sing and pray, but go out and work as though the very answer to our prayers depended on us and not upon you. Help us to realize that humanity was created to shine like the stars and live on through all eternity. Keep us, we pray, in perfect peace. Help us to walk together, pray together, sing together, and live together until that day when all God’s children — Black, White, Red, Brown and Yellow — will rejoice in one common band of humanity in the reign of our Lord and of our God, we pray. Amen.

Amen.

  6. Hi Deb! I love that quote about making forgiveness a ‘constant attitude’. I do think of it as a card to pull out of my pocket when I should use it, but really, it can be a way of life.

What a great world it would be then. Especially with all the demonstrations and misunderstandings going on between Christians and Muslims.
I’m glad you interrupted your planned post. This is important information for all.
    Blessings.
