An Important Truth to Remember When You Feel Like God is Disappointed
Are you hard on yourself . . . painfully aware of every failure and shortcoming?
When I’m disappointed in myself, it’s easy for me to believe that God is really disappointed in me as well. I imagine Him as a displeased parent because of something I’ve said, done, or thought.
Can you relate?
Paul began his letter to the church in Ephesus reminding them of this:
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.
Ephesians 1:3–4
Because we are “united with Christ” we are “holy and without fault in His eyes.”
Being aware of our sins is a good thing when it leads us to confess and repent but you and I don’t need to live our lives picturing God with a frown on His face as He looks at us.
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
Ephesians 1:5
Think about that for a moment . . . through faith in Jesus and the complete victory we have in Him, it gives God great pleasure. He is thrilled to claim you as His child. And I believe that comes with a loving Fatherly smile.
So, the next time you are disappointed in yourself, pause and repent, ask God to help you live according to His will for His glory, and then…
Praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.
Ephesians 1:6
The TRUTH is . . . God’s love is not dependent on our behavior. Yes, He hates sin but He loves you! In fact, He loves you (and me) so much, He sent Jesus to give us every spiritual blessing through faith and the power of His Spirit.
And that’s a compelling reason to worship, praise, and love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
A Prayer to Turn to God When I Feel Like He is Disappointed
Father, I can relate to Paul’s words, I do sinful things I don’t want to do and I fail to do the good things I want to do. I don’t live according to Your will. I am disappointed in myself and it’s hard to imagine that You are not disappointed in me as well. But Your Word tells me that because of Jesus I am “holy and without fault” in Your eyes. That it gives You great pleasure to forgive me and claim me as Your own child.
I praise and worship You, Lord. I love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. I want to trust and obey You. I want to follow Your will and live in ways that bring You glory! I want to focus on Your mercy and grace and celebrate all that You have done and continue to do for me each and every day. Please fill me with Your Spirit that I might share the truth of Your love . . . a love that forgives and gives me a future filled with hope and promise. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
We can so easily ascribe human attributes to God, our Father. People disappoint each other. We disappoint ourselves. And so, we believe that God is disappointed with us as well.
But when He looks at His children, He doesn’t see our sin. By His mercy and grace and through His gift of faith in Christ Jesus, we are forgiven. He removes every bit of our sin as far as the east is from the west. Yes, He hates sin but He loves people! He loves you!
Take a moment to pray the words of praise from David found in Psalm 103 with me:
Let all that I am praise the Lord;
with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me.
For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.
The Lord is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
Praise the Lord, everything he has created,
everything in all his kingdom.Let all that I am praise the Lord.
Psalm 103:1–2, 11–13, 22
Through Christ Jesus, you and I are fully forgiven and perfectly loved. And that’s a reason to PRAISE GOD!
On today’s note write:
When I feel like God is disappointed, I will remember His forgiveness and love.
May God be with you today and assure you of His unfailing love. God is not disappointed in You. He loves you!
What a joy it is to realize that God is never disappointed in us, but loves us in ways we can’t even comprehend. It makes confessing our sins and shortcomings that much easier.
Blessings, Deb!
You’re so right, Martha! When I know I never have to doubt His love to makes it easier for me to bring my shortcomings to Him in repentance. Praise God! Have a wonderful day!
I often feel I have disappointed God; be it through my actions, or through not following in obedience, not serving as I should or through taking my will back. How glorious it is to know that through Christ I am fully forgiven and perfectly loved. These are the most beautiful words I have ever heard. Thank you Deb.
