How to Love And Trust God “With All My Heart”

Have you ever said…

• I love you with all my heart.
• I believe that with all my heart.
• With all my heart, I apologize.
• With all my heart, I want to succeed.
• I will seek God with all my heart.

What do you mean when you use the expression “with all my heart”?

Here are some of the meanings I found: 1) with sincerest feelings 2) with all your energy and enthusiasm 3) to be fully devoted 4) to make someone or something your greatest treasure.

Psalm 9 begins with these words…

I will praise You, Lord, with all my heart;
    I will tell of all the marvelous things You have done.
I will be filled with joy because of You.
    I will sing praises to Your name, O Most High.

Psalm 9:1–2

Jesus said that God wants us to love Him with our whole being . . . heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’“

Mark 12:29–30

Why does God want us to love Him with our whole being?

Because that’s how much He loves us! He gave His life for us!

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 

John 15:12–13

When you and I truly understand the extent to which God loves us . . . loving and praising Him “with all our hearts” becomes our natural response to His love. Love that fills our lives with forgiveness, comfort, joy, peace, patience, kindness, hope, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control, family, and love.

Jeremiah wrote the following about God’s love…

The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
    His mercies never cease.
Great is His faithfulness;
    His mercies begin afresh each morning.

Lamentations 3:22–23

His love is greater that our worst sins and our worst circumstances.

That’s how David trusted God. when he was chased by his enemies, when he faced them in battle, and when he dealt with personal or national crises.

He believed that…

The Lord reigns forever,
    executing judgment from His throne.
He will judge the world with justice
    and rule the nations with fairness.
The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed,
    a refuge in times of trouble.

Psalm 9:79

So, let’s pause and ask ourselves…

What do I love with all my heart? Who do I love with all my heart?

When I look at my relationships, planner, expenses, and to-do list what do they say I love with all my heart?

Look at what Solomon told us to do “with all our hearts.”

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
    do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
    and He will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5–6

When we God with all our hearts, we want to TRUST His love, SEEK His will, and FOLLOW His guidance.

He promised that we can trust Him to lead us along the best path in every aspect of our lives. And along that path, we will experience His presence, care, compassion, mercy, grace, peace, strength, contentment, joy, courage, hope, and love.

I want that, don’t you?

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Love, Trust, and Praise God
With All My Heart

Father, Your blessings are all around me. Your love never fails. Your mercy never ends. Your grace is wonderful. You faithfully watch over all You have made. You are just and fair. You offer us strength, peace, joy, contentment and so much more.

You are my Creator, Savior, Help, and Counsel. And with Your help, I want You to be my life. I want to LOVE, TRUST, and FOLLOW You with all my heart.

When life is hard . . . please help me remember that You are my refuge and strength. (Psalm 46:1)You are my help and shield. (Psalm 115:9)You are my source of hope (Romans 15:13) peace (Philippians 4:7) and love (Romans 5:5).

Please give me all I need to focus my heart and mind on You. Please guide me along the path You have prepared for me and help me trust and obey Your will in my relationships and with my expenses and my time. Please help me love You with all my heart!

I love You, Lord. I give myself to You. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray. Amen.

The Life Application Bible Notes for Psalm 9:1 add:

Our inward attitude becomes our outward expression.

Loving God with all our hearts gives us the desire to live every moment for His glory and inspires us to ask the question, What Would Give God Glory? Our heart’s desire becomes showing our love for Him and for the people He puts around us.

Because “our inward attitude will always become our outward expression.”

When we love Him with all our hearts . . . it shows!
