Do you know someone you would characterize as being humble and loving? Would people use those words to describe you? Here are 12 simple ways to show everyone kindness, care, and compassion.

Paul wrote…

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Galatians 5:13

But that’s not what the world tells us.

The world says…

  • Do what makes you happy.
  • Look out for number one.
  • You are enough.
  • Put yourself at the top of your to-do list every day.

And Aristotle said…

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.”

But the night before He was crucified, Jesus demonstrated the importance of being humble and loving.

Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to His Father. He had loved His disciples during His ministry on earth, and now He loved them to the very end. It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given Him authority over everything and that He had come from God and would return to God. So He got up from the table, took off His robe, wrapped a towel around His waist, and poured water into a basin. Then He began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel He had around Him.

John 13:1b–5

The King of kings and Lord of lords, before whom every creature on earth will bow, took on the role of the lowliest house servant, kneeling before each of His disciples and washing their dirty, nasty feet. (Remember, these feet were not spa-treated. There were no pedicures for them.)

Why would Jesus pause this celebration of Passover to teach one more lesson?

The Life Application Bible Notes add that serving God, serving each other, and serving all people was the mission Jesus followers would receive.

So, we need to know what a humble and loving servant’s heart looks like.

Based on Jesus’ teachings, it’s the opposite of what the world says. A person who has a servant’s heart has eyes to see and a heart to care about the people around them.

So, let’s look at some things we can do to be humble and loving with a servant’s heart…

  • Apologize quickly and ask for forgiveness.
  • Say please and thank you.
  • Be patient even when it’s hard.
  • Be helpful and kind.
  • Listen to understand, not to reply.
  • Control our need to criticize.
  • Be caring and encouraging.

That’s a nice list, but how can we apply it to daily living?

12 Simple Ways to Be Humble and Loving Every Day

  1. Look people in the eye when we talk with them.
  2. Run an errand for a neighbor who is shut in.
  3. When you think something encouraging, say it out loud.
  4. Volunteer at church or a local ministry.
  5. Apologize to someone whose feelings you’ve hurt.
  6. Do things for your family without grumbling.
  7. Be honest and encourage honesty in others.
  8. Forgive the person who hurt you
  9. Hold a door, let someone else go first, or take the lesser seat.
  10. Smile often – it will make you feel better.
  11. Set aside “no-device time” with each other.
  12. Pray for your spouse, children, friends, family, etc.

We could go on and on and on.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Be Humble and Loving Like Jesus

You are the Lord of all. You created the smallest cell and the highest mountain, the sun, the moon, and every star. You have always been and will always be the One worthy of our worship and praise.

Yet, You left the glories of heaven and humbled Yourself to step into our world and live among sinners, willingly suffering at the very hands of those You came to save. Lord, You showed us how to live with humble and loving care and compassion.

You took the position of the lowliest servant and washed filthy feet. You touched lepers and spent time with sinners all to show them the blessing of Your grace, mercy, and love.

Please forgive my selfishness. Forgive me for listening to and putting into practice selfish worldly lies. By the power of Your Spirit, please help me glorify You by humbly loving everyone around me.

Bless me with a caring and compassionate heart. And please bless my relationships with Your grace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

After Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He said…

“Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”

John 13:12–15

I had a conversation with a friend the other night. We talked about reasons people might choose to be kind, humble, and loving toward others. Some believe being loving and kind will help them earn points with God.

But followers of Jesus want the world to see the beautiful difference that Knowing, Loving, and Trusting God has made in our lives. We want to share the blessing of God’s grace, mercy, and love, and we want Him to receive all the glory.

May we faithfully follow Jesus’ example and do as He has done for us. May we share God’s grace, mercy, and love with humility to glorify the One who gave everything for us.

We would love to pray for you.

  2. JoAnne Hogue says:

    Amen. Thank you Deb.
One other way to be humble and loving every day, is maybe to assume the posture of always learning. Every day…learning to be a little better than yesterday. A little more like Jesus, a little less like me❣️

  3. Humility is a true gift and very needed by all of us and practiced by all of us. I love the 12 ways you suggested to be humble and loving every day. Kindness goes far in dealing with others and also in being treated the same way.
Thank you, Deb! I appreciate your humility each day as I read your posts.

  4. I finally took the time to read your post (I’m behind on my emails!) Thank you, Deb, for this thoughtful article. The thing that struck me was that Jesus washed Judas’ feet, too! And He KNEW Judas would betray Him shortly thereafter! What a humble and kind and loving example for us to follow!
And I complain about little, tiny things…..sigh…..as another commenter said, we need to always be learning and striving to be like Jesus.
Thanks for this message, Deb! It’s a great one! Oh – I try and give the person behind me in line at any store the option to go ahead of me. I usually shop after work and appreciate standing in one place! Most all take that option and thank me for it…
