Truth to Know About Believing In Jesus’ Name

What is the difference between believing in Jesus' name and believing in Jesus? What does it mean that there is power in His name. He is the power of life ... or faith, hope, and love.

Have you ever wondered about the difference between believing in Jesus’ name and believing in Jesus?

The Bible tells us that both are important in a believer’s heart.

John wrote…

God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (NIV)

And…

This is His commandment: We must believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.

1 John 3:23

I turned to one of my favorite resources to help answer our question…

Any power attributed to the name of Jesus originates in the Person of Jesus. When we “believe in Jesus’ name,” we are trusting in the finished work of the risen Christ on the cross. ~ Got Questions

Both believing in Jesus and believing in Jesus’ name are blessings of a life surrendered to Him in faith. We pray in Jesus’ name because we trust Jesus’ power. The power is His, not in His name alone.

Got Questions adds this…

There is no magical power in the name of Jesus—there is only power in Jesus Christ, Himself.

The saving, healing, protecting, justifying, and redeeming power of God resides in the Person of Christ, and Jesus is His name.

By grace, Jesus gives us the power to LIVE in His LOVE!

John went on in verse 24 of 1 John 3…

The people who obey God’s commands live in God, and God lives in them. We know that God lives in us because of the Spirit God gave us.

I’m sitting here trying to find the right words to express my gratitude for the gift of the Spirit. We can’t and won’t believe in Jesus or understand His power in our lives, in a vacuum. We need the Spirit to guide us, and life’s situations and circumstances to prompt us to SEEK and KNOW Him, not just know about Him.

When you and I accept that our need for Jesus is greater than our pride and independence, faith begins. The Spirit then works in us, giving us the desire to KNOW more. He prompts us to turn to God’s Word, prayer, and the family of faith, helping us grow in LOVE for and TRUST in our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

Then, Jesus gives us the power to OBEY by loving others and living God’s commands for a moral life.

I can do all things through Christ, because He gives me strength.

Philippians 4:13

So, to answer the question, what is the power of believing in Jesus and His name? It is the power to KNOW, LOVE, TRUST, and OBEY, speaking the name of Jesus in faith and living to proclaim and practice His love.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9 (NCV)

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Believe in Jesus’ Name

Heavenly Father, we need You. Thank you for giving Jesus. Thank you for Your Word to tell us that believing in Jesus is the way to a relationship with You. Thank you for the Spirit who prompts us to have and grow in faith.

And thank You for Jesus’ power. Thank you for giving us access to His power when we call on Him in faith. I’m guilty of trying to do things on my own. I’m guilty of wanting things to be done my way in my timing. Please forgive me.

I sacrifice so much of what You want for me when I fail to rely on my Savior’s power. Your Word tells me to call on Jesus’ name when I need strength and courage to trust and obey. It tells me that the enemy of my soul will flee when I proclaim His name.

Jesus is the power I need to live with FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE. He is Lord of my Life. He is worthy of all my gratitude and praise forever and always. He is the One I need today and for all eternity. It’s in the holy name of Jesus that I pray. Amen.

What is the difference between believing in Jesus' name and believing in Jesus? What does it mean that there is power in His name. He is the power of life ... or faith, hope, and love.

The following quotes bless and encourage me…

“I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:17

“How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear!  It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear!” – John Newton

Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honor
and gave Him the name above all other names,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9–11

The truth to remember is that you don’t have to fight alone. You don’t have to carry your burdens alone. You are never alone.

Call on the name of Jesus. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. He is all-powerful. He is life, and He is love. Trust in Him forever and always.

  4. I’ve been calling on the name of Jesus, not so much for myself but for my husband and my husky, who just have been diagnosed with cancer. My first thought was that Jesus is the heavenly doctor. There are so many passages about healing. And I keep telling myself that if He had the power 2000 years ago, than He still has it. Yet, unfortunately, I don’t have a good track record when praying for my pets. Only the Lord knows why. Yet, I refuse to give up hope and trust in Him. Knowing that if He wants to than He can heal her with a word, with a touch, with a breath. Isn’t it what God’s Word says that nothing is impossible to the Lord.

Recently I got this passage – Come to me and I show you great and mighty things that you don’t know of. ….. and
I have heard your prayers, seen your tears, I will heal you….
Please keep her in your prayers. We have her since she’s 12 weeks old, and named her Keiko, which means blessed girl…
