The Helpful Truth About the Attitudes You Wear

We can spend a long time standing in my closet trying to decide on an outfit each day. But when was the last time we stopped and considered the attitudes we would wear? The attitudes you wear matter.

What are you wearing?

You know it’s one of the most important things about you. No, I’m not talking about your fashion choices. I’m talking about the attitudes you wear. And I’m pausing to check mine, too.

Paul wrote…

Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Colossians 3:12

I took a deep dive into the events of the past few days, questioning whether or not the people around me could have viewed me as thoughtful, humble, kind, caring, and patient.

What would the stranger at Walmart say? What about my children? Or the recipients of my responses on social media?

Was my love for the Lord and His people as obvious as the designer logo on my handbag?

Earlier in his letter to the Colossian church, Paul provided readers with a list of things to remove from their lives…

Put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires … get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.

Colossians 3:5, 8–9

Thinking about wearing my attitude like I wear my clothing has been a powerful analogy for me.

I can spend a long time standing in my closet trying to decide on an outfit each day. But when was the last time I even considered the attitude I would wear?

When I’m done with an outfit that no longer fits or suits me, I put it in my giveaway bag and get it out of the closet. Why don’t I put the same effort into cleaning out my attitude closet?

I rarely borrow clothes from friends. Why do I occasionally choose to borrow their bad attitudes, words, or behaviors?

Because our Lord Jesus is with and within us, we are to wear His character and model His attitude.

Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like Him.

Colossians 3:10

With the Spirit’s help, we have the power to choose what attitudes we will wear each day.

Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 4:23–24

God poured His grace on us through Jesus, and Jesus has given us a glorious wardrobe to wear.

So, let’s clean out our closets and wear the attitudes that model Jesus…

  • Kindness and Compassion
  • Humility and Forgiveness
  • Strong in Character, Gentle in Attitude
  • Patient and Caring
  • Truthful and Fair
  • Thankful, Hopeful, and Joyous
  • LOVE

Oh, how I want to wear those attitudes faithfully. I’m fairly certain they will make anything else I wear look more attractive. What do you think?

We can spend a long time standing in my closet trying to decide on an outfit each day. But when was the last time we stopped and considered the attitudes we would wear? The attitudes you wear matter.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for God’s Help with
the Attitudes You Wear

Father God, I want to wear the attitudes that glorify You. I know I don’t always remember that my attitude is as visible to the people around me as the outfit I put on. And too often, I forget that my attitudes are often more memorable than my fashion statement.

You know how much time I can waste deciding what clothes to wear, and yet, I’ll put on an unpleasant attitude without giving it a second thought. Please forgive me and help me do better.

I pray to have a SEEKer’s heart. I want to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST You with all that I am. I want to KNOW Your will and obey You devotedly. I don’t want my faith to be evident only at church on Sunday. I want it to glorify You every day, all week long.

Please help me by the power of Your Spirit, make me mindful of my attitudes, and help me treat everyone with kindness and compassion. Give me the wisdom I need to be humble and forgiving, patient and caring. And help me focus on Your truth and joyfully share Your hope and love with everyone around me.

Thank you for being patient with me, and for loving me even when my attitude needs improvement. Your grace, mercy, and love give me every reason to put on a fruitful attitude like Jesus’. In whose name, I pray. Amen.

We can spend a long time standing in my closet trying to decide on an outfit each day. But when was the last time we stopped and considered the attitudes we would wear? The attitudes you wear matter.

Here are a few quotes and verses to help us remember…

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Philippians 2:5

“Attitude is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.” ~ Charles R. Swindoll

Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 3:23–24

“The right attitude is this: that I have my own will, yet I will the will of God.” ~ Watchman Nee

I’ve noticed that wearing a clean, put-together outfit and a little makeup improves my mood. It helps me better handle those brief glimpses in the mirror.

I’ve also noticed that when I wear kindness, compassion, humility, care, patience, and a welcoming smile, my mood improves.

Be honest, when was the last time you wanted to spend time with a grumbly complainer? When was the last time just being around a grumbler ruined your mood?

The attitudes you and I wear matter!

So, may we, with the Spirit’s help, “clothe ourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”

God bless you and give you everything you need to wear an attitude that honors and glorifies Him.

We would love to pray for you.

I so loved this analogy, Deb! Yes, our outfits may look stylish and put together, but if we don’t check our attitudes in the mirror, we risk not showing Jesus’ love to the world. That’s a risk I’m not willing to take. Blessings, and thanks for the attitude outfit today!

    1. Thanks much, Martha! May our character be the outfit that shines God’s love to everyone we meet. Blessings and HUGS, dear friend!

  2. JoAnne Hogue says:

Love this analogy! I always want to wear my 1 piece outfit, the attitude of gratitude. You can mix and match with so many accessories! I can wear it with kindness, love, patience and forgiveness and so much more. I can wear it to work, to play and into the evening, in a casual setting or a party that calls for more formal wear. It’s the must have in your closet!
Thank you Deb! Hope you and your subscribers have a great weekend.

    1. I love this, JoAnne! May we think of gratitude as a foundational garment that goes under everything. Oh wow, what a difference we would make in the world. God be with you and bless you!

    1. You’re most welcome, Eve. God bless you!

  3. Wonderful post! And I loved JoAnne’s reply. I may add, “to dress for success in our Christian Faith, and attitude of gratitude is best!”
This is a wonderful reminder to stay in check of ourselves.
I appreciate this and I appreciate you.
Prayers for a wonderful and safe weekend for you. Hugs!

    1. Thank you, Sue! You know I often write about the reminders I need. So, I’m just thankful when God uses it to bless all of you! You bless me, dear friend! Have a wonderful weekend.

  4. Thank you for sharing what Jesus has put on your heart concerning the attitudes we chose to wear. The visual of the amount of time and thought I spend standing in the closet, choosing my outfit for the day, compared to how little thought I give choosing the attitude I will wear is something I will remember each day.
Thank you for speaking God’s truth into my life today and helping me grow to be more like Him; clothed in love, humility, compassion, truth and kindness.

    1. Thank you, Linda, for your kind words of encouragement. I love being able to share in this space and it blesses me so much to know that it has touched your life. God be with you and bless you!
