In Need of a New Attitude about Exercise
Those of you who know how much a hate to exercise might be surprised to learn that there was a time with I was a disciplined walker. Each week day morning began with 30 – 40 minutes of treadmill time.
Then I was diagnosed with agitated depression/anxiety, and the side effects of the medication made it hard for me to drag myself out of bed and almost impossible for me to workout.
It didn’t take long for me to strongly prefer relaxing with cup of coffee over getting all “shvitsty.”
I could control my weight with diet and I was physically active from a long to do list that came with caring for my home and family.
No problem. Or so I thought.
I don’t know when my attitude about exercise changed, but eventually the very thought of the treadmill made me want to run and hide. And walking outside was not an option because hills and inclement weather were great discouragers.
But I am committed to looking at fitness with intentional gratitude. Which I promise is 180o from where I’m starting.
Do you have a less than thankful attitude your fitness routine?
Are you in need of an attitude adjustment that will motivate you?
Join me everyday this week as I invite God to makeover my thinking and help me treat movement as the gift it is.
I have two simple goals . . . to become a better steward of my health through activity and to do something for five minutes every hour (sit-ups, push-ups, wall squats, running stairs, etc.). And finally to do both with a better attitude.
Are you in? Let’s pray:
Father, health, movement, and strength are gifts from You. You created us for physical activity, for work and play. Our thinking has become distorted. We diet and exercise to impress people, rather than to glorify You. Help us to look at every part of our physical health with intentional gratitude. Help us to use our bodies to serve You and bless others. Please guide our study this week. Help us to listen for Your voice, to learn Your truth, and to follow Your will. We need You, long-term foolish thinking is hard to change. Bless our desire in Jesus name. Amen.
Every time we pray our horizon is altered, our attitude to things is altered, not sometimes but every time, and the amazing thing is that we don’t pray more. ~Oswald Chambers
I have an aversion to exercise. Really though, as an “over 40” woman, I know that it is key to maintaining health and strength throughout my time here on earth.
Me too, Barbie. I am praying to change that with God’s help.
