Are Mirrors Wrecking Your Happiness
I like decorating with mirrors.
They make a room appear larger. They always go with your current decor. They come in many styles . . . framed, unframed, hanging, standing, large, or small. I believe mirrors make decorating easier.
I’ve wondered lately if having mirrors everywhere is best for our mental health and general well-being.
Are mirrors wrecking your happiness?
Each glance requires an evaluation. A grade of sorts. Begging us to compare our appearance with the images we see in magazines, on television, in movies, and everywhere we go.
I think about the women I met in Bolivian villages, and stories from friends who have returned from mission trips to other impoverished nations . . . places where the concerns are clean drinking water, food, and a place to rest not muffin tops and bad hair.
What’s the answer?
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
In the nineteen verses before this verse King Lemuel lists qualities of a “Good Wife,” things his mother taught him.
It is hard to find a good wife, because she is worth more than rubies. v. 10
She is:
- trustworthy
- a hard worker
- cares for her family
- a good steward
- caring of the poor and needy
- not selfish
- strong
- hopeful
- wise
If you’re familiar with the verses 10-29 you’ll know I didn’t mention things like getting up before dawn or making bedspreads and dresses to sell. I believe that some of her qualities we are universal but not all of them.
This is a list to model. It doesn’t matter if we have perfect clothes and makeup, or if we wear a size 4 or 14. What matters is the heart of a woman. The part we’ll never see when we look in the mirror. This list is found in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
Do I believe you need to take a fast from mirrors? Only if, like the queen in Snow White, you are controlled by the message you hear when you look in the mirror.
May we make peace with our mirrors and remember they only reflect the outside. Let’s not give them power over the inside.
Be blessed. Be a blessing.
Good reminder that our inner life–our spirit–is most important. I’m visiting from the weekend brew. Have a blessed weekend.
Thanks for visiting Carol. Many blessings to you!
When we moved into the home we are renting now, the master bedroom has a huge floor to ceiling mirror in the sink area of the bathroom. I still shudder when I walk by it. I am thankful that what I think I see on the outside has no baring on who I am on the inside.
I enjoyed this post. It’s my first visit to your blog and I am happy to have found you through The Weekend Brew. Blessings to you!
Thanks Marty, It’s a blessing to make new friends through link-ups. So glad you came to visit.
