6 Beautiful Blessings of Following God’s Will
Creation points to the Creator. It is God’s will for all He has made.
The heavens declare the glory of God
Psalm 19:1a
I sometimes wonder why David began Psalm 19 by telling us to “look up!” Look at God’s display in the heavens. Without a sound, the sun, moon, and stars proclaim the majesty of God.
Look at the amazing things He has created and KNOW that He is God!
Why? Why is it important for us to see the evidence of God in the world around us?
Because when we recognize who He is, when we are aware of His greatness and glory, we recognize our need for Him. And He wants us to be still and know our need for Him because He loves us so very much. He wants us to experience the blessings of loving, trusting and obeying Him.
After David proclaimed the truth of God’s glorious creative power, he went on to tell us the blessing of trusting and obeying His will.
The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
Psalm 19:7–9
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The commandments of the Lord are right,
bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear,
giving insight for living.
Reverence for the Lord is pure,
lasting forever.
The laws of the Lord are true;
each one is fair.
What do you think?
Do most people think God’s Biblical commands bring blessings and joy to life or do they believe they are there to spoil their fun? Do they believe it’s a blessing to follow God’s will or a burden?
God gave us His commands to guide us, help us, and bless us. He wants us to be safe from the consequences of sin, and to recognize how much we need His grace, mercy, and love.
Think about being a parent. You keep your little ones out of the street to protect them. You guide them to eat healthy foods because you want them to have healthy strong bodies. You insist that they do their assignments because you want them to be successful now and in the future. You set rules because you love your children.
Think about guardrails on the edge of a cliff. They’re not there to spoil your fun. They’re there to protect your life.
And David knew from experience the 6 Blessings of following God’s will.
When you and I recognize that God’s will is perfect, trustworthy, righteous, clear, and true—when we follow His will, His Spirit…
- renews us.
- gives us wisdom.
- brings us joy.
- gives us insight and understanding.
- cautions us.
- and gives us hope.
The Life Application Bible Notes say:
God’s laws are guidelines and lights for our path, rather than chains on our hands and feet. They point at danger to warn us and then point at success to guide us.
That’s why David could say…
They are more desirable than gold,
Psalm 19:10a
even the finest gold.
And . . . there is one more important truth we need to know about following God’s will…
We can’t benefit from the blessings of God’s instructions and commands if we don’t know them.
If we never teach our children right and wrong or if they stick their fingers in their ears every time we do, they won’t know the truths we’re sharing to guide and keep them safe. And the same is true for you and me. If we only read what people have to say about God and we don’t SEEK to KNOW Him ourselves through His Word and prayer . . . we won’t enjoy the blessings of His guidance and protection.
We won’t follow His truth if we don’t know it.
Did you know you can read through the New Testament in a year by reading just one chapter a day Monday through Friday? And you can read through both the Old and New Testament by reading just three chapters each day.
It’s still early in the year. Wouldn’t this be the perfect year to make a commitment to spend time with God in His Word every day? What if we spent just 24 minutes a day . . . 1 minute for every hour?
Let’s go to our Creator and ask for His help…
A Prayer to Follow God’s Will
Father, the sun, moon, and stars shine the light of Your creative power. The seasons come and go at Your command and all of nature follows Your divine plan.
But because of Your perfect love, You created human beings to freely love You. You gave each of us the freedom of receiving or refusing Your love. You want us to love, trust and obey You but You allow us to determine our own destiny . . . one of humble adoration and love or one of selfish narcissism.
Although I want my life to be full of love, I know I have times when I am selfish. Please forgive me and help me by the power of Your Spirit. I love You and I want to make trusting and loving You the desire of my heart.
Father, Your will is perfect. Paul wrote, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
I want that. I want You to transform me and change the way I think. I want You to make me more like Jesus. I want to know, trust, and obey Your will. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
May we pause today and focus on the following truth…
Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.
Matthew 6:32b–33
May we realize the blessings of following God’s will as we SEEK the Lord with all our hearts.
