The Truth About Jesus Being Fully God and Man

Blaise Pascal wrote…
“Not only do we not know God except through Jesus Christ; we do not even know ourselves except through Jesus Christ.”
How is that possible and what does it mean?
The Bible tells us it’s because Jesus is fully God and Man.
Paul wrote…
“In Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.
Colossians 2:9
So, let’s look at a moment when Jesus’ divinity and humanity were revealed to the people around Him and everyone who shares this moment through their testimony.
We ended last time with John 11:17…
When Jesus arrived at Bethany, He was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.
John 11:17
Martha, the sister who gets things done quickly came to see Him…
When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask.”
John 11:20–22
How many times have you thought or prayed, “If only..?”
Martha was convinced that Jesus could have healed her brother and spared her grief, and it seems she also believed that He could restore her brother’s life. But when Jesus mentioned it, Martha expressed her hope for the future not confidence in the present…
Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”
“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”
John 11:23–24
Can you relate to Martha’s faith? Have you had times when you believed Jesus could redeem your situation but questioned whether or not He would?
I’m thankful God showed us people who struggled with doubt and fear in the Bible, sinful people, like us, who asked questions and wrestled with pauses in their growing faith.
Everyone except Jesus.
Jesus was fully God and Man. 100%.
He professed that He was and is God, the resurrection and life that lasts forever…
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”
John 11:25–26
Prompting Martha, who knew Jesus well, to proclaim…
“Yes, Lord,” she told Him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.”
John 11:27
Martha then got her sister, Mary, who quickly ran to Jesus and said…
[When Mary] saw Jesus, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
John 11:32
And Jesus showed that He was fully human…
When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within Him, and He was deeply troubled. “Where have you put him?” He asked them.
They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
Then Jesus wept.
John 11:33–35
We’re blessed that God inspired John to record the moment for us.
I often believe because I KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST that Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life—the Son of God, I need to be strong and hide my emotions.
But Jesus, who is fully divine and human, openly displayed His. He did so in a way that was neither inappropriate nor excessive, validating the truth that our feelings are a gift from God.
God’s Word tells us that Jesus…
- Cried with grief at the suffering and death of loved ones.
- Got angry at sin, death, and hypocrisy.
- Showed compassion to those in need.
- Expressed fear and anxiety over His suffering and death.
- Displayed joy at every saved soul and miraculous blessing.
Yes, Jesus was and is fully God and Man who felt and expressed His emotions. May we learn from Him and follow His example.
Let’s pray and ask the Lord to empower us with His Spirit and follow His example with our God-given emotions…
A Prayer to Jesus who is Fully God and Man
Asking Him to Help Us Express Our Emotions
Lord God, thank you for moments like this that show us the truth … Jesus is God in a human body. He is fully God and man.
Many verses in Your Word make us question how we use our emotions. Solomon told us not to vent our anger. But He also said there was a time to laugh and a time to cry. Moses wrote we are created in Your image and when we look closely at Jesus’ life, we see that emotions are a gift from You. Without them, we would be robots.
Father, I am sorry. We are guilty of using them inappropriately and selfishly. Please forgive us. Please forgive me.
By the power of Your Spirit and the living example of Your Son, Jesus, help me use my emotions for Your glory. May they be a blessing for me and the people around me. May sin be the only thing that makes me angry and with Your help, may I communicate it in ways that honor You.
I give myself, including my emotions, to You. Please help me manage them well as I reflect Your love in everything I say and do. I love You, Father God, and thank You for showing us who You are through the One who is fully God and Man, Your Son, Jesus. In whose name, I pray. Amen.
Jesus is God—the Resurrection and the Life and He is Man who experienced pain, emotions, fatigue, and life. Yet, Paul wrote…
God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21
Next time, we’ll see that Jesus not only told people He was the Messiah—the Son of God but He showed them His resurrection power in the present.

I absolutely love that quote you featured from Pascal, Deb. It says it all! May God bless you today and always!
Thanks, Martha! I thought it was a good one too! HUGS to you!
Thank you, Deb! I am grateful that you talked about emotions and how Jesus did show his. I love the scriptures in John. Right now, I am reading Matthew again. Seeing and reading of the compassion Jesus had in the scriptures is so heartwarming and reassuring. I too, am like you and I
have trouble crying in front of people. I bottle all of the tears up and hold them in.
I appreciate the way you talk about yours. You are surely the best.
I pray that you stay safe and enjoy the rest of this week.
What a great friend you are, not only to me but to all who you bless with your wisdom.
Thanks, Sue! It’s easier for me to talk about my emotions than it is to show them. Praying to have a better balance of both in ways that bless and encourage others. Thanks for being you! Blessings!
