February is American Heart Month. 50 years ago President Lyndon B. Johnson formally designated February to educate and inform Americans about heart health. And yet, heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Visit the link above to learn the important things you can do to improve your heart health. I’m determined to add exercise and increase movement, and I’m inviting you to hold me accountable. Feel free to ask me how I’m doing.

Did you know that almost as important as diet and exercise is your emotional health? So…

How’s Your Heart?

“Emotional health can lead to success in work, relationships and health.” ~ APA

Emotional health includes the following:

Contentment

“It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.” ~ Dale Carnegie

I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. Philippians 4:11b-12a

Zest for Life

“Think excitement, talk excitement, act out excitement, and you are bound to become an excited person. Life will take on a new zest, deeper interest and greater meaning.” ~ Norman Vincent Peale

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy. Colossians 1:11

A Sense of Purpose

“You were made by God and for God and until you understand that, life will never make sense.” ~ Pastor Rick Warren

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. Romans 8:28

Balance

“Be aware of wonder. Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.” ~ Robert Fulghum

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17

Relationships

“Okay, here’s how to do relationships – be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God, in Christ, also has forgiven you.” ~ Chip Ingram

So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God. Romans 5:11

Love –

“Love is the only fire that is hot enough to melt the iron obstinacy of a creature’s will.” ~ Alexander MacLaren

“Many things are possible for the person who has hope. Even more is possible for the person who has faith. And still more is possible for the person who knows how to love. But everything is possible for the person who practices all three virtues.” ~ Brother Lawrence

Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to You. O Lord, You are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for Your help. Psalm 86:4-5

Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 19:19

I’m praying that your heart is full of contentment, enthusiasm, purpose, and balance; and that you’ll find reasons to celebrate love everyday.

BTW – It’s also Carrot Cake and Thank a Mail-Carrier Day! So have fun and celebrate.

Let’s talk: Do you have plans to improve your heart health this month?

  1. I can certainly tell that when our emotional health is low, it affects our physical health as well! So, I do what I can in that area, to trust God and choose joy! Sometimes it takes me a while to get there, but when I do I feel so much better all over!

    Blessings and Joy, Joan

    1. This time of year it’s especially easy to feel down . . . cold temperatures and snowy days leave us craving sunshine and flowers. How cold does it get where you live in CA? These are the days I have to crank up the music and play with our puppy. Even she is curled up in a ball sound asleep at the moment. Looks like our lunch break will include some running around the house.

May your day be filled with joy-filled blessings!

  2. Hi Deb!

Well, it is supposed to be a high in the 50’s during the winter here near Sacramento. We should also have chilly nights with frost. However, this winter is so strange! We’ve been having temps in the high 60’s and even in the 70’s!! Also, they’ve started rationing water around here due to hardly any rain. But, a new storm is on the horizon, so hopefully, we’ll get some soon! I must admit, I prefer feeling the seasons. I love a traditional fall and a cheerful spring. Winters with some snow would be nice…and, I could do without the hot summers! 110…is not for me! But, bloom where you’re planted, right? LOL
