The Most Important Things About the Wise Men
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Who’s the wisest person you know?
I think there are some important characteristics shared by wise men and women.
- They know they don’t know everything. They don’t have all the answers.
- They never stop seeking the truth. They never stop looking for answers.
- Wise men learn about the past so they can learn from the past.
Wise men/women are seekers.
However…
They choose who or what they follow carefully.
Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”
Where were the wise men going? What were they seeking? What were they following?
“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:2
The wise men knew the words of the prophets. They knew and believed the promises about a Messiah, and they wanted to know more. They were seekers of truth.
Are you a seeker of truth?
If you answer ‘yes’ it’s important to answer the next question as well.
Where will you go for truth?
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. James 1:5
Why ask God? Because…
The foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 1 Corinthians 1:25
4. Wise men point others to the truth they don’t give them all the answers.
Can you imagine a world where we quit telling people how to live and simply pointed them to the One who could guide their lives?
Freedom for us. Freedom for them.
Wise men seek the truth. Wise men follow the truth. Wise men point others to the truth.
Wisdom and Truth Quotes
Buy the truth and do not sell it—wisdom, instruction and insight as well. Proverbs 23:23
“Truth lies in character. Christ did not simply speak the truth; He was truth; truth, through and through; for truth is a thing not of words, but of life and being.” ~ Frederick W. Robertson
Deb, I loved this! I’ve been mulling over wisdom lately and these are just the words I needed to read. “Wise men point others to the truth they don’t give them all the answers.” I’ve found the balance tricky at times, but this is, indeed, the way to lead gently and not get in the way of Christ. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you as well, Katie! Balance is tricky isn’t it. Leading gently – I like the way you say that. God’s blessings to you!
“Can you imagine a world where we quit telling people how to live and simply pointed them to the One who could guide their lives?” <—Yes!!! This is the best thing I've heard all week! This is something I definitely need to work on. Loved this post – it gave me a lot of great ideas! -Jessica
Jessica, You made my day! Okay, maybe my week. Thank you for being the encouragement my busy self needed. May you enjoy a wonderful blessing-filled Christmas celebration with your family.
The title of our pastor’s sermon Sunday was “Living Wisely in a Foolish World”… We would all benefit by living more like the wise men in the Christmas story. Loving all the truths you shared regarding them today! Definitely taking them to heart. Happy Christmas Deb! ♥
Thank you Heather. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone began to value wisdom over knowledge, opinion, and culture. That’s something to pray for. God’s blessings on your Christmas celebration.
there’s only One who has the answers….
I think the fact that they were looking and seeking is what made these men “wise”.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, I love the little we know about these wise men and they are very inspiring.
I love the saying, “Wise men still seek Him.” You’ve summed that up beautifully here, Deb!
Blessings for a wonderful Christmas!
This is a really good read! It definitely helped me kind of refocus and make sure the things I am pursing are of value.
“They never stopped seeking TRUTH!”
Deb, Thank you for another great post. My pastor’s message on Sunday was on the wise men. If non-believers studied the prophecies and then journeyed to worship the King of the Jews; as believers we too should be studying the prophecies of Jesus’ second return. The key is to be ready–a faith virgin with enough oil in our lamp to not miss the Bridegroom (Jesus) when He returns.
Seeking the Truth…Jesus!
Blessings,
Kim
