How To SEEK the Light & Live Unafraid of the Dark

Have you ever been afraid of the dark? Darkness is associated with fear. The Light is considered illuminating & full of hope. Jesus defeated the darkness & declared that He is the Light of the World.

If we want to live unafraid of the dark, we need to SEEK the Light.

Light is a word associated with truth, knowledge, and wisdom in Scripture and in life.

John wrote…

God is light; in Him, there is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:5

In contrast, the word darkness is often connected to wickedness, evil, and fear.

Were you afraid of the dark as a child? I was! I can remember lying awake in the middle of the night, afraid of every sound and shadow.

I often wondered why anyone would choose the darkness over light, but John tells us it’s true…

God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

John 3:19

Oh, how we need Jesus, “God’s Light” who “came into the world” to give us truth, wisdom, and the knowledge of His saving grace.

Let’s look closely at one of Jesus’ powerful “I AM” statements…

“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

John 8:12

We don’t have to be frightened by the darkness around us when we SEEK, KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Jesus, the Light of the World.

The Life Application Bible Notes say…

Jesus was speaking in the Treasury—the part of the Temple where … candles burned to symbolize the pillar of fire that led the people of Israel through the wilderness. In this context, Jesus called Himself the light of the world. The pillar of fire represented God’s presence, protection, and guidance. Likewise, Jesus brings God’s presence, protection, and guidance.

In this world of sin, it can feel like evil is coming out of hiding and openly and boldly spreading its darkness. The enemy of our souls wants us to be afraid because people are easier to influence and manipulate when they’re frightened.

But God…

(Oh, how I love those two words.)

But God gave us Jesus, the Light who repeatedly spoke the words, “Don’t be afraid.” He promised not to leave or forsake those who trust and follow Him. (Hebrews 13:5) He promised that His grace is all we need. (2 Corinthians 12:9) And He promised that His love lasts forever. (1 Corinthians 13:8)

One of my favorite verses says…

My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; He is mine forever.

Psalm 73:26

When the Lord Jesus is our Light, we can say with confidence…

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
so why should I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1

Another blessing of SEEKing and living in the Light of the Lord’s presence, protection, and guidance is the ability to reflect His Light to the world around us.

Jesus said the following in the Sermon on the Mount…

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 (CSB)

By God’s grace, His light has and continues to overcome the shadows of evil. He is the blessing who makes it possible for us to let go of our fear because we can be confident He is present, protecting, and guiding.

So, let’s pause and thank God for Jesus, the Light of the World…

A Prayer to Live Unafraid Because of
Jesus – the Light of the World

Father, I thank and praise You for sending Jesus, the Light, to defeat darkness. I can remember being frightened by darkness as a child.

Light helps us see the world around us. It exposes lies and reveals the truth. There are reasons we carry a flashlight to light a path at night.

Our sinful world is full of evil and deception. It’s impossible to turn on the news without hearing something that invites feelings of fear and anxiety. The enemy is consistently working to tempt us with doubt and discouragement. Forgive me for the times I have given in to his lies, and help me keep my heart and mind focused on You.

I pray Your Spirit will work in me and remind me of Your constant presence, protection, and direction. You promise to give me the strength I need and assure me that You are generous in giving grace for my weaknesses.

I lift my hands to You. Please open my eyes so that I might see the glorious Light around me. Jesus promised to never leave or forsake me. Oh, how I need Him every moment of my life. I surrender myself to You, Lord. In the name of Jesus, my Savior, the Light of the World. Amen.

Have you ever been afraid of the dark? Darkness is associated with fear. The Light is considered illuminating & full of hope. Jesus defeated the darkness & declared that He is the Light of the World.

By God’s grace, Jesus defeated the darkness.

Author Ted Dekker wrote…

“My journey is so similar to everyone else’s journey because we all are human. We all have been defeated by the powers of darkness, and we all find redemption in the light of Christ.”

He’s right. We all know the defeat of darkness, but through Jesus, we have also experienced the brightness of God’s gracious love.

Jesus invites us all to Ask, SEEK, and Knock

I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

Luke 11:9–10

May we continually SEEK to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Jesus, the Light, because it is only through Him that we are forgiven and able to live with faith, hope, and joy amid the shadows of darkness.

We would love to pray for you.

I’m reminded of a praise song here, Deb: “Light of the World, you stepped out into darkness; opened my eyes, let me see . . .” May we always follow Jesus, trusting that His light will show us the way. Blessings!
