I wonder how often we pray powerful words of gratitude around the Thanksgiving table and stop as soon as the family leaves and our overbooked schedules return.

Imagine how our lives would change if we made Thanksgiving linger beyond the 4th Thursday in November to every day of the year.

Paul wrote…

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

I don’t know about you, but I fall short of being “thankful in all circumstances.”

I want to make my Thanksgiving linger and I do believe that living every day with a grateful heart is God’s will; not because His ego is fragile or He needs constant affirmation but because He knows that having an attitude of gratitude is good for me and you.

Studies have shown that being thankful is good for our health, our relationships, and our emotional well-being. What a shame to save all that for just one day of the year when we can enjoy the benefits of making Thanksgiving linger by having a heart of gratitude every day.

So let’s pause to thank God and ask Him to help us give thanks in all circumstances.

5 Prayers that Will Make Thanksgiving Linger

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
    His faithful love endures forever.

Psalm 107:1

Father God, I thank and praise You for who You are and all You do. You are gracious and good … You always have been and always will be. As I SEEK You through Your Word, I’ve learned that Your Word is not intended as a list of rules but a letter filled with love.

From “In the beginning, God created” through “Yes, I am coming soon!” … the Bible tells us the extent of Your love. You gave Your Son to save us and He left the glories of heaven for 33 long years to live among us and die for us. Following His suffering and death, You raised Him to life and showed us Your resurrection power giving us hope for the future.

Yes, Your faithful love endures forever and I thank you! Amen.

Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Colossians 2:7

Lord, I will SEEK You through Your Word and prayer. I will “be still” in Your presence so that I might KNOW You. I want deep roots that will give me a firm foundation for the storms of life, and I need strong faith to LOVE and TRUST You as You desire.

I believe that having deep faith roots will prompt me to celebrate Your grace, mercy, and love. Your Word says nothing can separate me from Your love. You are faithful to keep Your promises and I have countless reasons to live with gratitude every day forever and always. Amen.

Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Colossians 3:15

Father, I’ve read this verse many times and often feel discouraged and a bit hopeless. We fall far short of letting Christ Jesus rule in our hearts so we can live peacefully with one another. We are quick to find excuses to criticize and disconnect. Please forgive us.

This is the first time I’ve realized the difference gratitude can make in helping us live together peacefully. When we are corporately thankful for all You have done and do and focus on finding reasons to thank one another … we will bless our relationships and Your church. Please help us in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.

Philippians 4:6

Lord, when I look at the chaos in the world … I worry. But You tell me to come to You with the things that concern me. You invite me to tell You what I need and I need You. We need You. We always have and we always will.

When I prayerfully thank You for all You have done, I remember the many times You have turned hearts back to You throughout history. You have turned leaders and nations around and made them recognize their need for You.

Thank You. Please help us focus on Your love with gratitude. Help us think less about ourselves and more about You. I pray that we may decrease so that You might increase.

I worship You, Lord of all, the One who graciously gives me everything I need. Amen.

Give thanks to Him and praise His name.
For the Lord is good.
    His unfailing love continues forever,
and His faithfulness continues to each generation.

Psalm 100:4b–5

Father, Your unfailing love has been evident in everything You’ve done from the moment You spoke creation into being. Because You have kept every promise You have ever made, we trust that Your unfailing love will last for all eternity.

You are faithful to all generations. You are good and gracious. We thank and praise You with all that we are. As we celebrate the holiday of thanks we ask You to help us make Thanksgiving linger.

Please open our eyes to see Your wonderful works and quickly thank and praise You. And by the power of Your Spirit, help us shine the light of Your love so that the world at large may know You and enjoy the blessings of thankfulness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemeuth wrote…

“Be thankful. God has commanded it—for our good and for His glory. God’s command to be thankful is not the threatening demand of a tyrant. Rather, it is the invitation of a lifetime—the opportunity to draw near to Him at any moment of the day.”

I pray that your Thanksgiving celebration overflows with blessings and that you and you family enjoy an attitude of gratitude that makes Thanksgiving linger.
