When You Need Godly Wisdom – Pray Proverbs 3
The dictionary defines wisdom as having insight, knowledge, and good judgment.
Author Patience Johnson wrote:
“Wisdom is knowing the right thing to do and doing it at the right time to get the desired result. It is also the correct application of knowledge.”
But what is Godly wisdom?
The Bible says…
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
Psalm 111:10
all who follow His precepts have good understanding.
To Him belongs eternal praise.
God created us with unique attributes to accomplish His plans and purposes, and because of that, we don’t just need wisdom … we need Godly wisdom.
No amount of knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, or insight alone can give us that … because Godly wisdom depends upon an intimate dependent relationship with God through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Solomon understood the need for Godly wisdom. So, we’re praying Spirit-inspired verses from Proverbs 3 and asking God to give us what we need to accomplish His will.
Need Godly Wisdom – Pray Proverbs 3
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take. v. 5–6
Father, I want to trust You with all my heart. Please forgive me for the many times I’ve failed. It’s so easy to be persuaded by whatever idea is popular and persuasive but Your Word is full of examples of human understanding leading to disastrous results.
By Your grace, draw me close. By the power of Your Spirit, give me the wisdom I need to TRUST and OBEY Your will. I want to follow wherever You lead me and I know that begins with trust … trusting Your promises, goodness, and love. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. You are faithful and true. You give me all I need to SEEK, TRUST, and FOLLOW You with confidence and joy. Amen.
Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Proverbs 3:7–8
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Then you will have healing for your body
and strength for your bones.
Father God, it’s tempting to learn a little and believe we know it all! Please forgive us. Forgive me. You are the source of truth and wisdom. I need You to help me turn away from the world’s lies and follow You. Please forgive me.
I need Your forgiveness to heal my body from the lies of sin. I know sinfulness robs me of joy, peace, courage, strength, and closeness to You. I thank you for Jesus and for Your forgiveness, healing, and strength. With Your Spirit’s help, I SEEK the wisdom that only You can give. Amen.
Honor the Lord with your wealth
Proverbs 3:9–10
and with the best part of everything you produce.
Then He will fill your barns with grain,
and your vats will overflow with good wine.
Father, make me a wise steward of Your gifts and blessings. I want to use all I am and have for Your glory but I need Your help. I want my heart’s attitude to be generous and model Your loving giving nature. I don’t want to honor You with my leftovers; I want to serve You with my first and best.
Please help me trust Your promise to know my needs and provide them. Please forgive me for confusing my wants with my needs. And with Your Spirit’s help, I will trust Your loving care and share Your gracious blessings as You direct me. Amen.
My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline,
Proverbs 3:11–12
and don’t be upset when He corrects you.
For the Lord corrects those He loves,
just as a father corrects a child in whom He delights.
Lord, no one wants to be disciplined. I don’t even like to think about it. Being upset and pouting is often my natural response to dealing with the consequences of my failures. It’s not because I don’t deserve it but because I do.
I ask You to help me remember that Your correction always comes from Your love. You want more and better for us and know that only comes from trusting and obeying Your will. Although being corrected at the time is unpleasant, I humbly thank and praise You for the ways You use it to draw me closer to You. And I thank you for loving me and making me Your child in Christ Jesus. Amen.
For wisdom is more profitable than silver,
Proverbs 3:14–15
and her wages are better than gold.
Wisdom is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
Father, Thank you for Your Spirit who makes having Godly wisdom possible. True Godly wisdom helps me live with an eternal perspective. It gives me all I need today without reliving yesterday or worrying about tomorrow.
The precious gift of wisdom comes from Your loving hand and helps me humbly live under the guidance of Your grace, mercy, and love. You are Lord of all! I place all my trust in You. With Your Spirit’s help, I will SEEK Your will and TRUST Your LOVE. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
If you and I want Godly Wisdom, Jesus’ half-brother James wrote…
If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
James 1:5
And Theologian J. I. Packer said…
“Not until we have become humble and teachable, standing in awe of God’s holiness and sovereignty. Acknowledging our own littleness, distrusting our own thoughts, and willing to have our minds turned upside down, can divine wisdom become ours.”
May we humbly give ourselves to the Lord and ask Him to teach us and lead us with the wisdom we need to live each day for His glory.
We would love to pray for you.

Beautiful, Deb! May we always humble ourselves before the Lord and seek His wisdom and will in all we think, say or do. Blessings!
Thank you, Martha! Have a wonderful weekend! God bless you!
Deb, I am so grateful for my Bible!! I have relied on the wisdom from those pages and those wonderful people who God inspired to write. And, I am so grateful for you too!! True Christian friends are so special.
Everyday, I pray for God to lead me in the way He wants me to go. I want to always try to the best I can, to obey God. I know I fall short. I am so thankful God loves me anyway.
God will show us HIS wisdom if we sincerely ask.
Thank you so much for being a faithful friend and for passing on the wisdom God has blessed you with.
Have a great weekend and stay safe. Hugs!
I feel the same way, Sue! I’ve always been taught and read from the Bible but I fell in love with reading and studying it almost 20 years ago and have been drawn so much closer to God through His Word. Even though I’ve read it again and again, I learn something new every day. I need His wisdom and faithful reminders of His unfailing love and guidance. I hope you’re having a great weekend. Blessings and HUGS!
