Life is full of choices. Some big and some small. There are paths before us. So, how can we be sure we are choosing the right path? Read here...

Life is full of choices.

Small choices like what to eat for breakfast or what to wear. And big choices like what career to pursue, who to marry, or where to live . . . what is the right path for my life?

One of the interesting things about life’s choices is that although some are more important than others . . . there’s only one choice that will affect us for all eternity.

That choice is how you and I respond to God’s love and His gift of faith in and through Jesus.

Will we respond to God with a desire to KNOW, TRUST, LOVE, and OBEY or will we as David wrote:

…follow the advice of the wicked, stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.

Psalm 1:1b

The world doesn’t present the choice that clearly, does it? The enemy wants us to believe that we can be good enough to earn our way to heaven or that all “paths” of faith lead to eternal life with God.

But God’s word tells us there is only one way…

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6

This is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. 1 John 5:11–12

And when we KNOW, TRUST, and LOVE God through Jesus . . . we want to OBEY Him. We want to follow Him on the “right path.”

I believe that’s why David also wrote…

Oh, the joys of those who . . . delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank bearing fruit each season.

Psalm 1:1a & 2-3

The good news is that as we focus on God through His Word and prayer, the Spirit will give us everything we need to choose the path God wants for us. The Spirit will give us what we need to glorify God with our attitudes and actions. And He will give us what we need to love like Jesus.

Let’s pray and ask God to pour out His Spirit to help us respond to His love and choose the right path for our everlasting lives.

A Prayer to Choose the Right Path for Life

Father God, thank you so very much for Jesus, the Word made flesh. Thank you for Your Spirit who teaches us about You and about Jesus who physically showed us Your love and all that You want for us. Thank you for Your written Word and for inviting us to come to You in prayer.

David wrote, “For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.” (Psalm 1:8)

You have given us the freedom to choose and yet, You also give us everything we need to choose Jesus—the Way, the Truth, and the Life. You offer us the path that leads to life and the Spirit to show us the way.

Since sin entered this world through the choice made in the Garden . . . your children have used the freedom You give them to choose disobedience. You have allowed them to choose the path of life or the path of destruction.

Please help me follow the “right path,” the one You have prepared for me. Help me KNOW Your TRUTH by the power of Your Spirit and help me offer my life to You as a living sacrifice. And please give me everything I need to fully KNOW, TRUST, LOVE, and OBEY You. I ask this in the name of my Lord and Savior, Jesus. Amen.

Let’s look one more time and the way David began this Psalm…

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
    or stand around with sinners,
    or join in with mockers.
But they delight in the law of the Lord.

Psalm 1:1–2a

The Law of the Lord is the law of love.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.

Mark 12:30–31

And it is love that gives us joy!

Just look at the encouragement we’re going to find in the Book of Psalms this year…

May all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!” (Psalm 40:16)

As for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. (Psalm 59:16)

Let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread Your protection over them, that all who love Your name may be filled with joy. (Psalm 5:11)

The Lord wants us to follow Him on the right path that is watched over in love . . . the one that will fill us with joy that lasts forever.

May your heart be filled with His peace and joy as you follow the path of knowing, trusting, loving, and obeying the One who loves you more than could hope for or imagine.

  4. Amen and amen. Praying for a discerning heart, so I could sense the direction the Holy Spirit guides us. I believe He’s with me, but my heart is dull and deaf to hear the Heavenly guidance. There are so many questions, decisions, problems that I need answers to or solvation for. My deceitful heart betrayed me throughout my life. And it made me act like Mr. Littlefaith – always worrying if I really follow Jesus’ will, or my own and just pin His name to it?
I desperately need that deep rooted conviction of faith and trust in Jesus that sees only Him in every facet of life. I believe that’s the embodiment of real freedom – that covenant with Him, that anything comes let it be fire, storm or hurrican, I can face it because Jesus is with me and in me. That’s when I can have real, abandoned joy….

  5. I am blessed each time I take time to read and ponder truth. It is so easy to live in the fast lane. Until a hurdle appears that causes us to pause. Consider. Pray for help. I am on a journey learning ti he more intentional about pausing to seek His peace, grace and help. Trying to practice His Presence while staying active in daily tasks is fine. But I find my inner peace is renewed when I stop to listen to His voice. Completely stop all activity. I need that. And He always blesses. What a wonderful Savior and Friend we gave in Jesus.
