5 Prayers for God’s Help When You Want Justice

Counting My Blessings - Most of us want justice in the world but feel like we're living at a time when it's lacking. We're praying and asking God to intervene.

Do you feel like we live in a just and fair world?

Do you feel like people are treated fairly? Are you crying out for justice?

David began Psalm 17:1 with these words…

O Lord, hear my plea for justice.
Listen to my cry for help.

Psalm 17:1

Take a scroll through social media or listen to the news and there seems to be an ongoing missive that life’s not fair because the “other side” is corrupt and they’re getting away with it. It doesn’t matter the group with which you align . . . the message is that there is no justice.

But culture measures justice by looking at power, position, and possessions and it divides us into categories by race, gender, political persuasion, and religion, etc.

One group accuses the other of causing all the problems and justice gets lost in the mess.

So what should you and I do in the midst of accusations and persecution? When we want justice but life feels unfair?

Like David, we take our needs to God…

I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God.
Bend down and listen as I pray.
Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways.
By your mighty power you rescue
those who seek refuge from their enemies.
Guard me as you would guard your own eyes.
Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
Protect me from wicked people who attack me,
from murderous enemies who surround me.

Psalm 17:6–9

5 Things to Pray When You Want Justice

Father God,

  1. Pay attention to my prayer . . . I know you will answer.
  2. Show me your unfailing love.
  3. Guard me as you would guard your own eyes.
  4. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
  5. Protect me from wicked people who attack me.

You see, we can go to our Father, God, not because we deserve His provision or protection but because His Word tells us that He looks at justice and fairness through the filter of the cross.

We’ve all sinned. We’re all guilty.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:23

We all deserve God’s anger and judgment.

But…

God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was His plan from before the beginning of time—to show us His grace through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:9

Life’s not fair. It hasn’t been since sin became an inherent part of our world.

If it were fair, we would all deserve death and eternal separation from God. But because God is “rich in mercy and love” (Ephesians 2:4) He sent Jesus to save us.

When life feels unfair and we long for justice, we can go to God in prayer and trust Him to guide us through difficult circumstances. His justice is full of mercy and grace. His justice is full of love covers a multitude of sins. His justice sent Jesus into this unjust world to suffer and die for us . . . that’s not fair, that’s grace, mercy, and love.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for Help When You Want Justice

Father, we say we want justice but too often we want it for those who oppose us, not for ourselves. We want others to get what we think they deserve while we excuse our own words and actions as “not that bad.” Please forgive us. Please forgive me.

You inspired Ezra to write, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) That is my prayer, Lord. I want Your people to humbly SEEK You. I want to SEEK You first so that I might LOVE You and the people around me the way You command.

May we all stop pointing fingers and finding fault with one another. Please fill us, fill me, with Your Spirit, and help me love like Jesus. By Your grace, help me speak the truth, Your TRUTH, with gentleness and respect. So that through me, people might want justice . . . Your gracious and merciful justice offered and received through Christ alone. And it’s in His name, I pray. Amen.

So, let me ask again…

Do you want justice?

I do. But not the world’s idea of justice. I want everyone to want the blessing of God’s gracious and merciful justice.

Paul said that God justifies like this…

All are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Romans 3:24

You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:11 (NCV)

It is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

Romans 10:10

So, may we be so filled with His love that we remember God’s justice is received by grace through faith. And when it comes to our unfair world . . . may we share the TRUTH in love and leave the rest to God, praying and asking Him to cover us with His love, and protect us from the injustice around us.

We would love to pray for you.

    1. It is a challenge to keep from judging others. I’m so glad the Lord has shared with us that the better way is to give it all to Him and let Him to the judging. My prayer is to continually give it over quickly and trust His love and care one day at a time. Blessings!
