What do you do when your heart hurts? It's not unusual for us to choose to isolate and feel sorry for ourselves. But Jesus offered us a better way reminding us of His comfort and care. #brokenheart #Faith #Prayer #Hope

What do you do when your heart hurts?

My instinctual reaction is to curl up in a corner and feel sorry for myself.

But Jesus offers us a much better way to handle the burden of heartache…

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28

Have you ever paused to realize that we only have those words spoken by our Savior because He came to live with us?

God sent Jesus because He knew we couldn’t save ourselves. We’re sinful people living in a sinful world.

Paul wrote…

But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Romans 5:8

The Spirit helps us with our weakness. We do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit Himself speaks to God for us, even begs God for us with deep feelings that words cannot explain.

Romans 8:26

In the Old Testament, God walked with Adam and Eve and talked with Abraham, Moses, and others. In the New Testament, God came, lived, died, and rose again in the person of Jesus. And today, God is with us in Spirit.

One God – Three Persons graciously and mercifully caring for the people He created.

So, when your heart hurts … You can trust the Spirit to care for you with the love of the Father and the Savior. The Triune God knows exactly what your spirit needs and promises to provide it.

Listen for the Lord’s gentle whisper promising to comfort you and give you the strength you need moment by moment and day by day.

Even when I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for You are close beside me.
Your rod and Your staff
    protect and comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

Run to Him in prayer and cling to His promises. Because the truth is the more you KNOW Him the more you will trust His ability to comfort you when your heart hurts.

He knows everything we need and always does what is best for us. We can trust His love and amazing grace.

And even when He doesn’t give us exactly what we think we want, He will keep His promise to give us what we need.

Paul wrote…

My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to
give you everything you need.

Philippians 4:19

Let’s pray…

A Prayer for Times When Your Heart Hurts

Father God, thank you for sending Jesus to live among us and show us Your perfect love. Thank you for Your Word, which makes it possible for us to KNOW You and all that You want for us. Thank you for Your Spirit who comforts, encourages, guides, and intercedes.

You are my hope and strength when life is hard. You help me remember that I can do whatever You allow when You are with me. When I am weak, You give me strength. When my heart hurts, You comfort me. When I walk through the valley, You show me the way and care for my needs.

I love You, Lord. Thank you for reminding me … I don’t have to be strong when You are with me. You promise that when I bring my burdens to You I can trust You to give me what I need … even replacing my weakness with Your strength. I adore You. I worship You. I give myself to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Heavenly Father loves you so much He will not leave you alone when your heart hurts. He will always come to you in love and give you the comfort and strength you need.

Rev. Billy Graham wrote…

“Even in the midst of our worst times, God has not abandoned us. We may feel overwhelmed by our problems and sorrows — but God is never overwhelmed, nor do they take Him by surprise.”

And Joni Eareckson Tada wrote…

“You don’t have to be alone in your hurt! Comfort is yours. Joy is an option. And it’s all been made possible by your Savior. He went without comfort so you might have it. He postponed joy so you might share in it. He willingly chose isolation so you might never be alone in your hurt and sorrow.”

My prayer for you today…

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say.

2 Thessalonians 2:16–17

May the Lord be with and bless you. May He graciously give you everything you need.

We would love to pray for you.

  1. Such a wonderful blog! However, I do pray that in the future you won’t use Billy Graham as an example. Of all the false teachers, I would like to believe that he’s probably one of the worst.
