Informative Truth about the Way God Works for Good
What does it mean that God works all things for good in our lives?
Everyone has times when life feels anything but “good.” And yet, this verse gets quoted often as one of God’s promises.
How can God be working for good when our circumstances are miserable?
Paul wrote…
We know that God makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are chosen to be a part of His plan.
Romans 8:28 (NLV)
Life wasn’t always sunshine and unicorns for Paul. Three chapters later, he wrote about the many hardships he had suffered as a servant of Christ. He was imprisoned, whipped, beaten with rods, stoned, shipwrecked, robbed, tired, hungry, and cold.
Honestly, that doesn’t sound “good.”
So, how could Paul boldly say that God works for good in the lives of His chosen ones?
Paul looked at his circumstances and ours with an eternal perspective. He fully believed that through Jesus, we can look at life differently because we have been set free to trust God in all things. We live with confidence that in good times and bad God is at work in our lives.
He trusted that if God allowed pain and persecution in the life of His child, He would use it to bless them spiritually.
I have come to believe the following truth about the way God works for good…
God wants us to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST Him now and always. So, He is always at work helping us grow in faith. He uses “all things” to bless His children spiritually working in and around us to guide us in this life and prepare us for the next.
I know, we’d all like the promise to mean that God works for good leading to our immediate happiness but because He is perfectly gracious, merciful, and loving … He knows that may not be what we need most.
Honestly, we’re most likely to take Him for granted and neglect earnestly SEEKing Him when everything is blissful.
James wrote…
Don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us His true word. And we, out of all creation, became His prized possession.
James 1:16–18
God is good. Everything He does is good. From creation through the rest of forever … We can be confident that God is working for good.
Remember … God showed us how very good and loving He is when He sent Jesus to save us.
He gave us the Word made flesh (John 1:14) to save and the living and active written word (Hebrews 4:12) to guide us.
The truth is that whatever is happening in our world or the world around us … God is working all things for the good of those who love Him.
Let’s pray…
A Prayer Trusting that God Works for Good
Father God, You are good and You are always at work for the good of Your children. I begin my prayer by humbly thanking You for making me one of Your children. Thank you for the many ways You have worked in and around me showing me the blessing of KNOWing, TRUSTing, and LOVING You.
Please forgive me for the times I have listened to the enemy’s words of doubt when life is painful and disheartening. “Lord, I believe. Please help me overcome my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24) By the power of Your Spirit, please help me face each day confident that You are with me giving me everything I need.
More than anything, I want to spend my eternal future in Your presence. Please give me an eternal perspective. Even as I ask for Your help and intervention in my current circumstances, please help me remember that You are love and everything You do or allow comes from Your goodness and perfect parental care.
Please help me share the truth of Your goodness and love that many will want to KNOW, LOVE, and TRUST You and Your eternal promises. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
I love the following quotes. They remind me that God works for good simply because He is good…
“I find joy in every day, not because life is always good, but because God is.” ~ Anonymous
“God is God. He knows what He is doing. When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.” ~ Max Lucado
“God does not give us everything we want, but He does fulfill His promises, leading us along the best and straightest paths to Himself.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
God loves you! He is good and everything He does is good!
And…
By His grace, we can be confident as His children that God works for good in our lives. He is leading us along the best and straightest path to Himself.
So, when life is hard and the enemy tempts you to doubt God’s goodness and love cling to His reliable promises. The greatest good God has given His children is Jesus who is the promise that lasts forever.
