5 Verses to Pray Thanking God for Freedom and Independence
The 4th of July is celebrated as Independence day in America.
So, what does it mean to be independent?
1. Not subject to control by others: self-governing.
2. Not requiring or relying on someone or something else.
Synonyms for independence are:
self-sufficient, self-reliant, self-supported, and self-sustaining . . . the ability to live in freedom.
On July 4th, 1776
56 individuals added their signatures to the Declaration of Independence.
The document states…
We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States … And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.
Let’s take a couple of minutes to look at some of the things God’s Word says about what it means to live free and independent as a child of God.
But when the right time came, God sent His Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent Him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that He could adopt us as His very own children.
Galatians 4:4–5
So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to Him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
Romans 8:1–2
Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Live as servants of God.
1 Peter 2:16 (NCV)
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
Galatians 5:13
I will keep on obeying your instruction forever and ever. I will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to Your commandments.
Psalm 119:44–45
Today as we celebrate our freedom and independence, may we as followers of Christ remember that our freedom was purchased at a high price. We have freedom and independence because individuals gave their lives so that we might have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And by God’s grace, we have forgiveness and freedom because Jesus gave Himself to suffer the punishment for our sins.
We look around at the moment and national freedom can feel fragile but as followers of Christ Jesus, the freedom we have in Him lasts forever and always. May you and I use the freedom we have been given to honor God and bless each other.

A Prayer Thanking God for
Freedom and Independence
Father, thank you for Your love. You created us to love and be loved by You. You gave us the freedom to choose Your love or the sin of pride and selfishness. We chose sin. But You never stopped loving. You sent Jesus to suffer our punishment for our sin—to save us and set us free. Christ Jesus paid the price for our freedom. He paid the price for my freedom and I am forever thankful.
Your Word tells me to use the gift of freedom and independence to serve the people around me and show them Your love. Father, I know I fall short of loving the way You want me to love. Please forgive me and help me.
Please help me, help us all to know and love You completely. Help us love You with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. Help us share Your love by loving others with kindness and compassion. Help us listen to each other with patience and understanding.
Father, Your Word says that if Your people will humble themselves, seek You, and turn from wickedness, You will hear their prayer and heal their land. I pray that for our nation! I ask that we might as a nation, turn to You and repent of our collective sins, that we might be healed and restored by Your grace and mercy. And that we might elect leaders who are people of faith and integrity.
Thank you for the blessings of freedom and independence . . . please help us use both in ways that give You glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
We are only four years away from the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. May we prayerfully stand together over the days ahead, surrendering our lives and our nation to the Creator and Savior of our souls.
I’d like to close with a couple of quotes from the signers of the Declaration of Independence:
“Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual. … Continue steadfast and, with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us.” ~ John Hancock, History of the United States of America, Vol. II, p. 229.
“Suppose a nation in some distant Region should take the Bible for their only law Book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God … What a Eutopia, what a Paradise would this region be.” ~ John Adams, Diary and Autobiography of John Adams, Vol. III, p. 9.

Happy Independence Day, Deb! Hope u and your family and/or friends have a blessed day of celebration! I thank God constantly for the freedom His saving grace has given to me! And I genuinely pray for our nation constantly! The devil is devouring so many these days. It breaks my heart that our once God fearing nation has turned their back on God. I pray always for all the leaders and lost souls to be touched with God’s heart of love! We must continue in prayer for our nation and pray God, that more will come to know the FREEDOM that only HE can provide and it can never be taken away! May God have mercy on our nation and help us through these dark times.
I agree, it is easy to get discouraged, Kathy. I’ve been prayerfully trying to pay less attention to the news and more attention to the kind people I see in my neighborhood and community. Your post is a great reminder of Daniel’s prayer for the nation – “We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;”
While scores of people deny that the country was founded on God and Faith, I’m grateful for your reminder. Indeed, this country had a special purpose and let the Lord’s mercy restore it. Though I also know the political side of the direction we’re heading today, the oppression and bondage that comes with it, the spiritual bondage we are facing today is far worst.
Let the Lord’s mercy bestowed on this country and nation that it could repent as Ninive.
