Important Prayers That Will Help You Live Your Purpose

What is your purpose? God has created each of us for His plans and purposes. And with His help we will accomplish that for which we were created . . . by His grace for His glory.

What’s your purpose?

Every person on earth is a unique individual created by God for His plans and purposes.

So, when you and I are confused about the what or why of our purpose . . . God knows. That’s why it’s important for each of us to go to Him prayerfully asking for His help and guidance.

Psalm 86 is another one of David’s honest prayers full of requests for counsel and direction. It’s a helpful example that shows us how we should pray when we want to know God’s plans and purposes.

Let’s take a look.

David began with the following…

  • Lord, hear my prayer. I need You. (v. 1)
  • Protect me and save me. I trust You. You are my God. (v. 2)
  • Be merciful to me. Give me joy. I give myself to You. (v. 3–4)

Verse after verse, David acknowledges who God is as he asks for His help, protection, mercy, and grace.

But then he adds this…

Teach me your ways, O Lord,
that I may live according to Your truth!
Grant me purity of heart,
so that I may honor You.
With all my heart I will praise You, O Lord my God.
I will give glory to Your name forever,
for Your love for me is very great.

Psalm 86:11–13a

I want to commit these words to memory and pray them often because, like David, I want to know God’s ways and live according to His truth. I want a pure heart that is focused on living for His glory. I want to live my God-given purpose.

Other translations say “teach me Your ways” like this…

  • Teach me what You want me to do. (NCV)
  • Teach me where You want me to go. (TLB)
  • Teach me how You want me to live. (NET)

And they say “grant me purity of heart,” like this…

  • Make my heart focused only on honoring Your name. (CEB)
  • Unite my heart to fear Your name. (ESV)
  • Teach me to serve You with complete devotion. (GNT)
  • May every fiber of my being unite in reverence to Your name. (TLB)
  • Make me wholeheartedly committed to You. (NET)

I want to make it my purpose to trust and obey God’s will and live with a heart that is wholeheartedly committed to Him.

You see, I believe that’s my purpose. I believe that’s your purpose, too. It’s the purpose God gives to each of us. It’s why we were created.

We are each given the purpose of SEEKing, KNOWing, TRUSTing, LOVING, and OBEYing God. We were created to PRAY, PRAISE, and GIVE THANKS. God created you and me because He wants a relationship with us . . . a relationship where we receive His love, where we love Him in return and extend His love to others.

What if we are the ones who make it complicated? We listen to what the world says matters and values, when God calls us to serve Him with love right where we are.

Moses wrote…

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases Him, and love Him and serve Him with all your heart and soul.

Deuteronomy 10:12

And Jesus said…

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.

John 15:12

That’s why David asked God for help. He knew that he couldn’t love and serve God the way He wants without His help. And, like David, neither can we.

So, I will continue to pray…

“Teach me Your ways that I may live according to Your truth. Grant me purity of heart that I may honor You. I will praise You and give glory to Your name forever.” Amen.

I’d love for you to join me.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Live Your Purpose

Father God, You are so gracious and good. Thank you! Countless times I have come to You for help and forgiveness and You never turn me away. You lovingly listen and then You work in my life with perfect parental love and care. You forgive me each time I come to You in humble repentance.

I ask You to “Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to Your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor You.” You created me to love and be loved. Please help me live well the purpose for which You created me. Help me love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. And help me love others with a servant’s heart. Make me more like Jesus . . . full of truth, caring and compassionate, patient and faithful.

Please open my heart so that I might KNOW and TRUST Your truth. Make me willing and able to accomplish the purpose You have planned for me today. Make me aware of every opportunity You have made for me and give me a cooperative spirit to express Your love and glorify You wherever I am. Whether I’m at home with my family, at work, with friends, or surrounded by strangers . . . help me see Your spirit in everyone I encounter.

With all my heart I will praise You, O Lord my God. I will give glory to Your name forever. Amen.

What is your purpose? God has created each of us for His plans and purposes. And with His help we will accomplish that for which we were created . . . by His grace for His glory.

Friend, God is calling us, equipping us, and preparing us to be used for His plans and purposes.

So when you want to know your purpose turn to Him in Word and prayer.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5–6

We know how dearly God loves us because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.

Romans 5:5

We are equipped by God to love and He promises to give us everything we need to live the purpose for which He created us.

May we love God with our whole being and love all people as He commands. May we live with a heart focused on glorifying our Creator, Savior, and the Spirit of Truth.

God bless you and give you everything you need to live your purpose.

We would love to pray for you.

  2. Ana Cordova says:

This is wonderful really made me realize that I need to continue to praise God and ask him to teach me how to love the way he loves me. When I’m having a difficult moment I need to pray more and trust in his will so that he can guide me in my good and bad times.
I want him to give me the unfailing love and Grace to be his servant and to others. Also to have fear of God so that I do not doubt him instead to give me wisdom to always trust in him.
Thank you Deb this really was an eye opening.
    Have a wonderful blessed day.
