This Is The Wonderful Way Harmony Unites Us

God didn't create us to be exactly alike. He gave us unique personalities and abilities. He created us to live together in faith and love because harmony unites us and makes us family.

I love listening to a well-voiced acapella group. Perfect harmony blended into one perfectly united voice.

Many of my favorite memories outside of those made with my family were spent singing with others. I started singing in our school’s children’s choir and singing became a part of my life through high school, college, and for many years after.

Harmony unites us!

I rarely sang the main melody parts. I was always a 2nd Soprano or 1st Alto and I’ll admit I’ve always loved singing the harmony.

Psalm 133 begins with the following…

How wonderful and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in harmony!

Psalm 133:1

The thing that’s true about harmony that is a powerful lesson for life is that although not everyone is singing the same note, they’re all singing the same song.

That’s the wonderful way harmony unites us!

We don’t all have to think the same thing in order to get along … in order to be united.

Jesus prayed these words in His “High Priestly Prayer”…

All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

John 17:10–11

The Heavenly Father, the Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are perfectly united. In fact, the Life Application Bible says the unity of the Trinity is the “strongest of all unions.” Our God is three distinct persons united in purpose and equal in holiness, power, love, mercy, righteousness, knowledge, patience, kindness, goodness, and all other characteristics and attributes.

Paul wrote…

I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.

1 Corinthians 1:10

Followers of Jesus don’t have to agree on every detail of life but they must be willing to work together to shine the light of God’s love in a dark and broken world. Followers of Jesus are to be united in SEEKing Him, LOVING Him, TRUSTing Him, and sharing His love with others.

We are each uniquely made by God to love and be loved by Him … and to love and be loved by one another. Separate individuals united in purpose. God’s church should be like a massive choir of people singing the same song in harmony for God’s glory.

God didn't create us to be exactly alike. He gave us unique personalities and abilities. He created us to live together in faith and love because harmony unites us and makes us family.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer: Harmony Unites Us to Live in Love

Father, Your Word makes it clear that You want Your children to be united to one another through faith … that we are to love each other sacrificially, like Jesus. Your Spirit inspired Paul to write, “Clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace.” (Colossians 3:14–15)

Yet, we are guilty of bickering and bashing each other over some of the most foolish things. Please forgive us. Please forgive me.

You created us with unique personalities, gifts, and abilities. You have never wanted us to all be exactly alike. You want us to be the beautiful individuals You designed us to be. You want us to be a family of people united through the love of Christ Jesus. You didn’t create us to sing in unison but to faithfully remember that harmony unites us.

By the power of Your Spirit, please help us live in harmony. Help us use our gifts and abilities to shine the light of Your love for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

God didn't create us to be exactly alike. He gave us unique personalities and abilities. He created us to live together in faith and love because harmony unites us and makes us family.

The Life Application Bible Notes say the following about Paul’s first letter to the Church in Corinth…

“Divisions between Christians work like brick walls and barbed-wire fences to undermine the effectiveness of the message that believers are to proclaim. Focus on Jesus and the purpose He has for you. Strive for harmony.”

Before we close today, I’d like to encourage us all to pause and think about the messages we are posting on social media. It breaks my heart when I read some of the silly things we choose to fight about. And I use the word “fight” because some of the things I read are divisive and full of contempt and disdain.

Christ Jesus has called us to share His love … to “go and make disciples.” He told us that we are to be “light and salt” … shiny and spicy. We are told that the evidence of the Spirit within us should be love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, etc.

We are to continuously remember that harmony unites us. We don’t have to agree on everything but we do have to keep Jesus’ message clear:

  1. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
  2. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34–35
  3.  I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. John 17:21

May the Lord surround you with a faith-filled family of believers with whom you can live in harmony.

We would love to pray for you.
