8 Important Reasons It’s Important to Bless the Lord

The Psalmist wrote "my soul, bless the Lord." What does it mean to bless God? How do we bless Him? Blessing God is more than just attending church each week. It's a daily attitude and changed heart.

Psalm 134 is only three verses long…

Now bless the Lord,
all you servants of the Lord
who stand in the Lord’s house at night!
Lift up your hands in the holy place
and bless the Lord!
May the Lord,
Maker of heaven and earth,
bless you from Zion.

Psalm 134:1–3 (CSB)

What does it mean to bless the Lord?

It means to love and glorify God from the depths of your soul.

What do you do when you love someone and want to glorify them?

You speak well of them when you speak to them and about them. You do your best to do what pleases them. You spend time with them. You thank them. You praise them.

David wrote the following…

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
    bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all His benefits.

Psalm 103:1–2 (ESV)

The Lord is our Creator. Savior. Spirit of Truth.

  1. He forgives. v. 3
  2. He heals. v. 3
  3. He redeems. v. 4
  4. He satisfies. v. 5
  5. He is righteous and just. v. 6
  6. He is merciful and gracious. v. 8
  7. He is slow to anger and abounding in love. v. 8

And the most important reason of all is #8 … He gave Himself to save our souls!

What would you do to bless the Lord who gave everything for you?

The Message tells us…

Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it.

Romans 12:1–2 (MSG)

And…

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.

Colossians 3:16 (MSG)

If we want to bless the Lord … it’s not just something we do on Sunday morning at a worship service or even with a 10-minute devotion each day. Oh, those are wonderful and they definitely bless the Lord.

But what David was talking about when he wrote “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name!” is a way of life! And a change of heart. It’s loving Him with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. It’s loving our neighbors as we love ourselves.

Blessing the Lord is giving ourselves to Him as a living sacrifice every single day.

Oh, we won’t do it perfectly. We will always need His mercy and grace. For all of our lives here we will need to go to Him in repentance humbly asking for His forgiveness.

However, living to bless the Lord will be the desire of our hearts. And that’s a desire He loves to fulfill…

Take delight in the Lord,
and He will give you your heart’s desires.

Psalm 37:4
The Psalmist wrote "my soul, bless the Lord." What does it mean to bless God? How do we bless Him? Blessing God is more than just attending church each week. It's a daily attitude and changed heart.

Let’s pray…

A Prayer to Bless the Lord

Father God, I thank and praise You with all my heart. Your grace and mercy have covered me all of my life.

You gave Your only Son to save me from sin, death, and the deceiver’s power. (Romans 8:1–2) You sent the Spirit to fill our hearts with Your love. (Romans 5:5)

You forgive, heal, redeem, and satisfy the desire of our hearts. Your grace is sufficient for all our needs. You give me everything I need to live each day according to Your will.

Please forgive me for giving in to the temptations around me. I fail to take every part of my life and offer it to You as a loving sacrifice. I fail to love other people the way You desire. I’m so sorry, Lord. Please heal my heart and help me that I might surrender my all to You and live every moment of every day in ways that bless and glorify You.

Although that is my heart’s desire, I am unable to do it in my own strength. Please fill me with Your Spirit and help me each day that I might bless You with all I am and all I do. May I keep Your countless blessings always before me and lift Your name on high. You are the Lord of my life now and forevermore. I thank, praise, and glorify You. I love You, Lord. Amen.

The Psalmist wrote "my soul, bless the Lord." What does it mean to bless God? How do we bless Him? Blessing God is more than just attending church each week. It's a daily attitude and changed heart.

Here are just a few quotes about the blessings of the Lord…

“An infinite God can give all of Himself to each of His children. He does not distribute Himself that each may have a part, but to each one, He gives all of Himself as fully as if there were no others.” ~ A. W. Tozer

“The motive is this, ‘Oh! that God could be glorified, that Jesus might see the reward of His sufferings! Oh! that sinners might be saved, so that God might have new tongues to praise Him, new hearts to love Him! Oh! That sin were put an end to, that the holiness, righteousness, mercy, and power of God might be magnified!’ This is the way to pray; when thy prayers seek God’s glory, it is God’s glory to answer thy prayers.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are His dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered Himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Ephesians 5:1–2

May the Lord bless you and may He forever and always be the desire of your heart.

  3. The Lord blessed me with words, but unfortunately not a good singing voice! I love to sing, but few would love to hear me! I have so much to sing praises to Lord, and I do believe in harmony! I would love a world where everyone would live in harmony together. Thankfully God loves and sees us all as his children.
If I could sing, I would sing a Happy Birthday song today to my friend Kathy. I will just say, Happy Birthday Kathy! I hope that you have a day as special as you are.
    God bless you Deb.
